Who we are The Birla Academy of Art & Culture was established in 1967 with the principal objective of fostering the growth of art and culture with emphasis on visual and performing arts. In this time, the Academy has established itself as a centre of cultural, artistic and educational activities. History It all started when Sri & Smt B.K. Birla; foremost industrialists of India, had started collecting rare and valuable treasures of art out of their profound love for art & beauty. With a sizeable collection in place, it was decided that such veritable treasure troves of history should be accessible to all. A public Charitable Trust was created in 1962 with a view to collecting, preserving and exhibiting art objects for the public. For accommodating the proposed institute, the present eleven storied building was completed in 1966 and it was formally inaugurated under the name “Birla Academy of Art & Culture” by Karan Singh in 1967. It is now one of the premier museums and art galleries of the country. It consists of spacious display-halls, necessary for full-fledged cultural centre of modern importance.
Birla Academy of Art and Culture Emerges As The preferred Art gallery In Kolkata and India Established back in 1967, the Birla Academy of Art & Culture today functions with a soul focus on developing art and culture taking it to an all new artistic paradigm. Being a famed art gallery, it also give special emphasis on performing and visual arts and in the recent times it has also created a benchmark as being an artistic hub for creative, academic and cultural activities. Recently, the art gallery has organized an interesting exhibition that was titled “Recent Acquisitions 2011-2015”, where none of the exhibits were for sale. This exhibition focused on some of the best paintings and artworks of the gallery that were accumulated between the years 2011 and 2015. The exhibits exuded the innovative thought process and the creative finesse of the artists. For instance, an exhibit included a painting by Paula Sengupta that was titled “Rivers of Blood” that was a tobacco trail woodblock hand embroidery and appliqué that is done on table lenin and serigraph on acrylic sheet. Another prominent exhibit was by Rohini Reddy that was titled “My Dream” and was a bronze figurine depicting a figure, gazing above in a dreamlike stance. Made of bronze this figurine resembled a traditional tribal artwork.
