  5. General Safety • Dress • Safety glasses • No loose clothing/long sleeves • Skin covered • No cuffs on pants • No jewelry on hands • Keep hair tied back

  6. General Safety • Behavior • Only use machines/tools you have permission for • Inform instructor of: • Injuries, no matter how small • Machines operating incorrectly

  7. General Safety • Behavior • Practice safe behavior • Eye glasses on • Stand away from others using machines • Items aren’t being thrown • No horseplay

  8. General Safety • Metal • Assume all metal is hot • Use pliers, not gloves • Put oily rags/etc in red metal receptacle, not the regular garbage can • Scrap goes into scrap piles

  9. General Safety • Good housekeeping • Always clean up your area • Always put tools back where they go

Oxyacetylene Welding • Know the proper procedure • Check that all tanks off, butterfly valves backed out, and torch valves closed before starting • Open Oxygen all the way • Open acetylene ¼ turn • Adjust Oxygen butterfly valve to 20 psi • Adjust Acetylene butterfly valve to 5 psi • Torch is ready – crack acetylene valve to light, then adjust flame

  11. Oxyacetylene Welding • Cylinders • Tied up in proper place • Keep caps on • Never drop • Hoses • Check for holes with soap, not oil • If holes, need replaced or professionally repaired (can’t tape, etc)

  12. Oxyacetylene Welding • Cutting • Use gloves and shaded goggles • Be aware of your surroundings • Cut in proper ventilation • Never cut galvanized metal indoors • Other • Don’t use oxygen to blow dust off your clothes • Wear clean clothes, no oil/grease

  13. Arc Welding • Arc Welding • Fusing two pieces of metal together • Higher the amperage, hotter the weld • Deeper the penetration • Beveling can increase penetration

  14. Arc Welding • Preparation • Use a shade 10-12 helmet with your glasses on underneath • Cover all skin, wear gloves and clean coveralls • Weld in a dry area • Floor should be clean of materials

  15. Arc Welding • When Welding: • Your lead angle is 15 degrees • Hold electrode 1/8-1/4 inch away from plate • Weld should be 2 electrodes wide • Two 1/8 electrodes = ¼ inch wide weld

  16. Arc Welding • When Welding: • If your electrode sticks, break it loose or shut off power • Do NOT remove your helmet until you’ve done the above • Use the exhaust system • Yell “cover” to start
