3. How Hedley Hopkins Did a Dareby Paul Jennings • Sculpture Drawing Students create a skeleton and use split pins to make moveable joints. Create a puppet from News paper.

5. Millie and the Night Heron by Catherine Bateson • Painting Do you have a weird friend like Sheri? Paint a picture of them. • Decorate a tote bag. • Use fabric paint, add buttons, feathers and beads to make the bag original.

6. Millie and the Night Heron • Decorative wrist bands. On a piece of wide black elastic 16cm long, sew a selection of buttons. Use dimensional paint to add decoration. Join the band with a button.

7. Millie and the Night Heron • Photography. Take digital photos of birds. Print in black and white. Discuss light and shade. Students draw using different mediums.

8. The True Story of Mary, who wanted to stand on her head Jane Goldwin • Draw and paint someone standing up straight with their hands above their heads. Turn the picture upside down and trace in texta. Now they are standing on their head.

9. Mary’s friends. • Sculpture • Using thin wire create a shape of a camel. • Cover the wire in alfoil to make it stable and mount on a piece ofpolystyrene foam.

10. Rex by Ursula Dubosarsky • Draw the class pet or a picture of Rex., with Wax crayon. • Paint with water paints. Sprinkle water on the top so the colours run. • Printing. Create a mono print of the flower shop. Colour with water paint.

11. Annie’s Chair by Deborah Niland • Painting. Collect pictures of chairs, enlarge them and paint a picture of your pet sitting on the chair. • Study the work of artists and the way they depict their chairs. • Sculpture. Create a chair using balsa wood pins and PVA.

12. Daddy’s having Horse. by Lisa Shanahan • Plasticine picture. • Provide students with coloured plasticine and a thick piece of cardboard. Students create a creature they they would like to have and call their own. • Sculpture. Discuss body parts, 4 legs, a head, tail, etc. Students construct a rocking horse from polystyrene and pop sticks.

14. Run , Hare, Run. • Who is the artist depicted in the story? • If possible bring in a live rabbit for the students to draw. Provide students with a variety of materials. Emphasis the texture if the fur and how it can be represented with line. • Look at Durer’s prints. Create a mono print of a rhinoceros.

15. The Sound of the Seaby Warren Crosset • Pastel drawing. • Students can bring in pictures of places that they have visited with their families. • Experiment with the chalk pastels. • Draw on black and white paper.

16. The Island by Peter Sheehan • Have students close their eyes . Read the description of the creature to the students. • Painting. Crayon and wash. • Sculpture. • Use coloured plasticine to create a creature.

17. The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Rileyby Amy Lissiat • Sculpture . • Make a model of a rat and place him in a box. • Fibre. • Sew a rat, add pipe cleaner tail and legs.

18. Creatures of the Rainforest; two artists explore Djabugay country.by Warren and Eglitis Brim • Print Making. • Use bubble wrap to create the background. Paint the animal on a separate piece of paper. Cut out and paste onto the background.

19. Creatures of the Rainforest • Drawing. • Draw a picture onto overhead plastic using a black texta. Turn over and colour in . Display on windows

20. Creatures of the Rainforest • Plasticine print. • Roll a flat layer of plasticine onto a piece of thick cardboard. • Use a pencil or stick to draw an animal. Apply ink with a roller and print.

21. Charles Darwin’s big Idea. by Robin Stewart. • Collage. • Collect pictures of shells and insects. Colour and cut out. • Create backgrounds by mono printing. • Arrange pictures and glue on.

22. The Big Picture Book; See life on Earth unfolding through time, by John Long • Sculpture. • Make your own fossil. Use clay or plasticine. • Glue onto black card. Give it a scientific name and classify.
