TEA - STAAR • Performance standards will be reviewed once every three (3) years. • Assesses content and skills from the TEKS at a greater depth and higher level of cognitive complexity by requiring students to apply content and skills in more integrated and authentic ways. • Designed to focus on the TEKS that are necessary both for success in the current grade or course and for readiness in the next grade or course. • Cut scores to be determined for College Readiness.
TEA – HS Graduation Plan • Students take Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II • Fourth year of math can be taken from the following: • AP, IB, or independent studies Math course • PreCalculus • Advanced Quantitative Reasoning • CTE Mathematics course
THECB – new TSI Assessment • Item review period • Jan 2013 • April 2013 • Standard setting period • Jan 2013 • May 2013 • Recommendation for Board approval in April 2013 • Training
THECB – new TSI Assessment • Test Development • Elementary Algebra and Functions • Intermediate Algebra and Functions • Geometry and Measurement • Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability • Classification of scores • College Ready • Developmental Education • Adult Basic Education
THECB – new TSI Assessment • Assessment Task Force will convene to provide recommendation to the THECB leadership team for recommendation for Board approval • Standards will be posted at public registry sometime in early March for public comment. • http://www.sos.state.tx.us/texreg/index.shtml will include TSI assessment standards, including proposed cut scores. • Standards scheduled for approval at April 25, 2013 board meeting
THECB – new TSI Assessment • New TSI Assessment, if approved, will go into effect on the first day of fall 2013 classes. • Affects students late registration, delayed starting dates for fall 2013. This includes dual credit students. • You are encouraged to preview the new TSI assessment after August 1, 2013. Check with your Testing Director for more information.
THECB - ACGM • Mathematics • Course description for College Algebra • In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, and conics may be included.
THECB - ACGM • Mathematics • College Algebra Student Learning Outcomes • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range, operations, compositions, and inverses. • Recognize and apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions and solve related equations. • Apply graphing techniques. • Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial and rational functions. • Recognize, solve and apply systems of linear equations using matrices.
THECB – Core Curriculum • Hours to earn a degree • Associate’s degree – 60 SCHs • Bachelor’s degrees – 120 SCHs • Core adjustments timeline • Due to CB Nov 2013 • Approval by CB Feb 2014 • State-wide implementation fall 2014 • Core transferable if 42 SCHs is completed

Bills affecting IHEs • SB 497 - Relating to the number of SCHs required to earn an associate’s degree to public institutions of higher education • SB 436 - Relating to administration of collegiate learning assessments to students at general academic teaching institutions • HB 82 - Relating to a single common course numbering system for public institutions of higher education in this state • HB 813 & SB 414 - Relating to the authorization by the THECB for certain public junior colleges to offer baccalaureate degree programs
