  1. THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY 2-2

  2. Distributive Property • This property combines multiplication with addition and subtraction. • To multiply a sum or difference, multiply each number within the parentheses by the number outside the parentheses. 3(2 + 6)

  3. 3(2 + 6) • Distribute the 3 to both numbers inside of the parentheses by multiplying. • 3(2) + 3(6) 6 + 3(6) 6 + 18 24

  4. Examples: • 20(100 + 2) 8(15 – 5)

  5. Reversing the Distributive Property • You can also use the reverse of the Distributive Property, by taking out a common factor. • Example: 5(4) + 5(3) 5(4 + 3) 5(7) 35

  6. Examples: • 7(21) + 7(9) (16)2 – (11)2

  7. Creating Distributive Property Problems • Take the number on the inside of the parenthesis and break it down into 2 different numbers (it is easiest to break it into two numbers that add together to make that original #) • Then solve using the Distributive Property rules

  8. Example… • 7(23) 7 (20 + 3) 7(20) + 7(3) 140 + 21 161

  9. Examples… • 1.) 4(98) 2.) (102)3
