  5. Relief of Great Britain TWO MAIN REGIONS: 1) LOWLAND BRITAIN Lowland Britain lies to the south-east. 2) HIGHLAND BRITAIN Highladn Britain lies to the north-west.

  8. Highland Britain • comprises all the mountainous parts of Great Britain and extensive uplands lying above 300 metres 1. The Highlads of Scotland • the highest mountains in the British Isles, are divided: • 1) The North-West Highlands • 2) The Grampian mountains • The highest peak – Ben Nevis -1.342 m (The Grampian mountains)

Rivers, Lakes, Canals • British rivers are not very long but owing to frequent rains they are comparatively deep • Only the largest are navigable : • the Thames, the Severn, The Trent 1)The ports and rivers: • London – Thames • Glasgow – Clyde • Liverpool – Mersey • Newcastle - Tyne • Bristol - Avon

Forest and Woodland • Woodlands occupy only about 8 per cent of the surface of the country • 1)Lowland: • has been cultivated and there are only few forests: • New Forest, Epping Forest, the Forest of Dean • 2)Highland: • many parts are treeless – • have only thin soil • The most common trees: • oak, beech, ash, pine, birch
