God’s Creative Acts • 1. The length of a day in Genesis 1 • Nothing in scripture itself permits the view that the days of creation are different than a normal, literal, 24-hour day • Only attacks on the reliability and historicity of the Bible or of its accuracy • Or theories from the philosophy of science • Or cosmological theories
God’s Creative Acts • 1. The length of a day in Genesis 1 • Would lead anyone to interpret the days of Genesis 1 as long as epochs of time • Old-earth theories of creation diminish the clearBible statements that God created the universe by divine fiat • God didn’t tinker with creation until He got it figured out and suitable for the correct form of mankind
God’s Creative Acts • 1. The length of a day in Genesis 1 • Examples of elaborate theories: • Precambrian • Paleozoic • Mesozoic • Tertiary • Quaternary
God’s Creative Acts • 2. God’s creation on day one- Light • 1:3- “And God said- Let there be light, and there was light.” • On day one God created time and matter and light • 1:1- “In the beginning...” • The beginning of what? – Answer – time • Before this, there was no measurement of time
God’s Creative Acts • 2. God’s creation on day one- Light • There was eternity past • The first week- time is measured • God has always existed • Revelation 1:8, 4:8- “Who was, and is, and is to come”
God’s Creative Acts • 2. God’s creation on day one- Light • Matter was created by God in an instant by God’s decree • Created ex nihilo- from nothing • Gen. 1:1- God created the heavens and the earth • Day one: time, matter, light • Without light, all creation would remain cold and dark and dead
God’s Creative Acts • 2. God’s creation on day one- Light • God Himself- “…dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see.” • 1 Timothy 6:16 • Part of God’s nature is light • He expanded His light as a gift to the universe • Light is a vital form of energy
God’s Creative Acts • 2. God’s creation on day one- Light • Much light is invisible to our eyes- example: infrared rays • Lenses refract light to increase visibility (example: eye glasses) • Light provides a vital source of heat • The Spirit of God, Gen. 1:2- “…was moving over the surface of the waters.” • God’s Holy Spirit was directly involved in every specificact of creation
God’s Creative Acts • 3. Day two: the firmament- Genesis 1:6-8 • As day two began, the earth was still covered with water • Genesis 1:6,7- “Let there be a firmament…” • Remember how God accomplished His work? – by speaking His Word • Psalm 33:6,9
God’s Creative Acts • 3. Day two: the firmament- Genesis 1:6-8 • Firmament- the vast protective atmosphere around earth • Balancing of elements essential for life to exist • Other ancient, non-Biblical literature • Legends about sea monsters and Gods and cosmic battles • Babylonians- Marduk defeats Tiamat (ocean goddess)
God’s Creative Acts • 3. Day two: the firmament- Genesis 1:6-8 • V.6- “God said” • V.7- “…and it was so” • Not a long process, but an instant powerful act • Firmament provided a greenhouse effect • Longevity- over 900 years • Before the flood, there was no rain- Genesis 2:5,6
God’s Creative Acts • 4. Day three: Seas and continents • Genesis 1:9-13 • After day two, the earth was still uninhabited and uninhabitable • The entire surface was covered with water • By the end of day three, dry land and vegetation • Earth was established
God’s Creative Acts • 4. Day three: Seas and continents • God gathered the seas into their place and caused the dry land to appear • When did continents appear? • Day three or at the flood? • “…all the fountains of the great deep were broken up”- Genesis 7:11 • But seas- plural were divided from land (v.10)
God’s Creative Acts • 4. Day three: Seas and continents • Ordering seas and land was no small feat • Moving rock and earth • Minerals, rock, and fertile soil formed • Natural resources provided? – coal, oil • Now the earth was ready for life
God’s Creative Acts • 5. End of day three: plant life • Genesis 1:11,12 • Plant life appeared because God decreed it- 1:11- “Let…” • Plant life did not generate from something inanimate, such as life-less rocks or dirt • God spoke and vegetation of every kind sprouted- 1:11,12 • Plants- yielding seeds
God’s Creative Acts • 5. End of day three: plant life • Fruit trees • Seeds in the fruit • Mature vegetation was created with seed already in it • Fully rooted trees and plants • Already bearing fruit • Every kind was preprogrammed with DNA and genetic specificity to assure that each would reproduce “according to its kind”
God’s Creative Acts • 5. End of day three: plant life • “After their kind” is a phrase repeated ten times in Genesis 1 • Genetics • Fundamental Law of Genetics- • …every living organism has a unique DNA structure with genes and chromosomes that determine all its characteristics
God’s Creative Acts • 5. End of day three: plant life • …God has established that no amount of cross-pollination can cause a new species to arise • …every species stays within its own kind • …Note • …all of life did not descend from a commonsource of life • …God created every plant and tree unique and separate from every other kind
God’s Creative Acts • 5. End of day three: plant life • …evolution claims that life comes out of the water first • God says that life appeared first on dry land • How does pollination occur? • By insects • When were they created?- day six • Genesis 1:5,8,13
