  8. Migration in the history of Latvia • 2nd part of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th century – after repeal of bondage Latvian peasants emigrated to Siberia and other territories in Russia where they had a chance to get land in their property. Approximately 200 000 people emigrated and made about 500 Latvian colonies in Russia. • 1905 – 1907 – after Revolution about 5 000 people went to Western Europe because they were afraid of repressions by Russian authorities. • 1915 – 1920 – as a result of the First World War 800 000 people of Latvia as refugees went to Russian provinces. • 1941, 1949 – deportations. The Soviet authorities deported about 60 000 people, who were considered dangerous for the Soviet regime, to Siberia and other further territories of Soviet Union.

  9. 1944 – 1945 – at the end of the World War II approximately 250 000 inhabitants of Latvia went as refugees to save from the second Soviet occupation. They settled down in Scandinavia, Western Europe and in other regions of the world. • 1950 – 1988 – about 200 000 people from other republics of Soviet Union immigrated in Latvia – labour force, military force. This type of migration was specially promoted by Soviet authorities. • 2000 – 2014 – approximately 200 000 people have left Latvia. They have chosen their new residential places in Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and other countries. The main reason of their emigration is a possibility to do better-paid jobs.
