Post War Problems SWBAT: Understand the differences/similarities and advantages/Disadvantages of Capitalism and Communism. Homework: “Labor Unrest” worksheet Do Now: Define (the best you can) capitalism and communism http://oregonteacherblog.chalkboardproject.org/teaching-strategies/rock-paper-scissors-how-not-to-bore-your-students-with-a-lecture-on-communism-socialism-and-capitalism/
The Game- Round One • Everyone is given a random number of Hersey Kisses. Some will have a few and others will have many. • Write down the number you were given on your paper. • Get up and play rock, paper, scissors, shoot and each time you lose, you must give the winner a Hersey kiss. • Once you run out of candy, you must sit down.
Welcome to Capitalism • Private ownership of industry and land • Freedom to compete • Results in different economic classes How would you define capitalism using the game we played as a guide? What would be some advantages/disadvantages to this system?
Round Two • I will take back all of the candy and redistribute it equally among everyone. • Again, get up and play rock, paper, scissors, shoot and again each time you lose, you must give the winner a Hersey kiss. • Once you run out of candy, you must sit down.
Welcome to Communism • Government owns all industry and land • Classless society. • Strives for equality (everyone is paid the same amt.) How would you define capitalism using the game we played as a guide? What would be some advantages/disadvantages to this system?
Why does this matter in a post-WWI world? • 1917 Russia’s czar was overthrown and executed by communists under Vladimir Lenin. • Russian Bolsheviks called for a world wide overthrow of capitalists systems. • A communist party formed in the US and attracted a lot of people. • When radicals sent bombs to business and government leaders, people thought that communists were going to take over. • This is the beginning of the “Red Scare”.
The Palmer Raids • In 1919 Mitchell Palmer, J. Edgar Hoover, and their agents tracked down suspected communists, socialists, and anarchists. • Completely disregarded civil rights: • entered people’s homes and offices without warrants • jailed people without allowing them legal council • Deported immigrants without trials. • The raids failed to turn up evidence of any revolutionary conspiracy. • The raids did however increase American’s fear of immigrants and foreigners.
What did this lead to? • Nativism: prejudice against foreign-born people. • Isolationism: a policy of pulling away from involvement in world affairs.
Victims of these attitudes • Italian immigrants and anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested and charged with robbery and murder of a factory paymaster and his guard. • Witnesses said the murderers “appeared” to be Italian. • At the trial, both men had provided alibis during the time of the murders. • Nonetheless, the judge found them guilty of murder and sentenced them to death by electric chair.
A personal voice • “In all my life I have never stole, never killed, never spilled blood. We were tried during a time when there was hysteria of resentment and date against the people of our principles, against the foreigner. I am suffering because I am a radical and indeed I am a radical I have suffered because I was an Italian and indeed I am an Italian…If you could execute me two times, and if I could be reborn two other times, I would live again to do what I have done already.” Bartolomeo Vanzetti
