UNIT 3 Buying Power
Language Points • article the vs. no article • indirect questions EXs. Direct: When will you send the package? We want to know when you’ll send the package. Direct: Do you have an oven? Could you tell me if you have an oven?
Asking things extra politely Think of questions to ask your partner. - Use the indirect form to ask each. - Take turns asking and answering each other. - Keep talking until time is up.
UNIT 4 Taking Care of Business
Language Points • have / get something done EX. I had my nails done yesterday. We’ll get our house painted this summer. • have / get + indirect object EX. They’re going to get a friend to watch their house. Jung-min had someone tutor her in math.
Discussion • In regular conversation, talk about things you’ve had / gotten someone else (to) do for you. - shopping - work or study - repairs - personal care - etc. - etc.
UNIT 5 Through the Grapevine
Language Points • Reported speech EX. “I’m planning a party,” Jim told me. Jim told me [that] he was planning a party. • Reported Questions EX. “Will you drive me home?” (Du-ho) Du-ho asked if I could drive him home. “Who are you riding to the party with?” (Amy) Amy wanted to know who we were riding to the party with.
Take half of the conversation: • change your dialogue into reported speech (questions) • Are you going to the party tonight? • No, I’m too busy studying for the test. A. What are you doing this weekend? • My family is having a picnic on Saturday. Do you have plans for the weekend? • Not really. But I think I’ll catch up on my homework. • I’ll try to finish mine before the weekend. A. That’s a good idea. What classes do you have to study for? B. I have a homework assignment in History, and I have to study for a quiz in Science.
*wish to - means almost the same as “want to” - much less common EX. “I wish to see the president.” *hope to - used when mentioning possible plans - somewhat common EX. “I hope to see the movie tonight.” hope and wish
Unit 6: We concentrate on wish and hope with relative clauses: EX. “I hope [that] I can see that movie tonight.” “She hopes she gets to travel abroad next vacation. EX. “She wishes [that] you would give her an ‘A’.” “ We wish the government didn’t raise taxes so often.”
Practice • p. 61 D Talk with your partner about each of the subjects listed. - have a short conversation about your hopes and wishes - don’t forget to use 2nd conditionals when appropriate (esp. with wish)
