  2. The Early Years • Born on August 28, 1828 in Russia’s Tula Province, Yasnya Polyana. • Fourth out of five children • Family old Russian nobility • Mother • Countess Mariya Tolstaya • Father • Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy • Family moved to Moscow • Father died shortly after

  3. A Young Adult • 1844 Tolstoy studied at Kazan University • Began drinking and gambling • 1851 joined army with brother • Began writing • Married Sophia Andreyevna Behrs • Well known in Russia

  4. Later Years • Became very religious • The more religious and beloved he became by the country, the more his family disliked him • Tolstoy became depressed • 1910 he fled his home in search for peace • Died while traveling at age 82

  5. Works • Most famous: • War and Peace • Anna Karenina • The Death of Ivan Ilich • Hadji Murad • Childhood • Boyhood • Youth • Wrote over ten novels, twenty short stories, seven plays, four essays, and five non-fiction pieces • Works give a depiction of his own life
