Definition 1-1 Major Depressive Disorder A mood disorder in which a person experiences, in the absence of drugs or a medical condition, two or more weeks of significantly depressed moods, feelings of worthlessness, and diminished interest or pleasure in most activities 3
Etiology (Causes) 1-2 Causes of MDD • Exact causes - unknown • Chemical changes in the brain • Genes- tends to run in families • Alcohol and drug abuse • Sleep problems • Stressful events 4
Symptoms 1-3 Symptoms of MDD • Psychological & physical • Loss of interest in daily activities • Lack of motivation • Overwhelming sadness • Weight loss or gain • Changes in sleep • Fatigue or extremely low E • Feelings of worthlessness • Trouble concentrating • Thoughts of suicide 5
DSM-IV-TR Diagnostic criteria 1-4 Criteria for MDD • At least 5 of the following, during the consecutive 2-week period, representing a change from previous functioning; must include either (a) or (b) • Depressed mood • Diminished interest or pleasure • Significant weight loss or gain • Insomnia or hypersomnia • Psychomotor agitation or retardation • Fatigue or loss of energy • Feelings of worthlessness • Diminished ability to think or concentrate: indecisiveness • Recurrent thoughts of death, suicide attempt 6
DSM-IV-TR Diagnostic criteria 1-5 Criteria for MDD • Symptoms do not meet criteria for a mixed episode • Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment of functioning • Symptoms are not due to the direct physiologic effects of a substance or a medical condition • Symptoms are not better accounted for by bereavement 7
