  2. What are rights? • In groups of three make a KLW chart about rights on your big paper:

  3. Rights • Definition: what individuals and groups are allowed to do in society, as established in law • From watching the movie what are human rights? • How do human rights affect people’s quality of life?

  15. Creating A country In groups of three you are going to create a country. (Write down some of your beliefs and values for your country. Also give your country a name.) Each country will need to use their six hundred dollars to buy the rights they want for their country. We will only be using rights from the auction list. After your country has bought all of it’s rights you need to reflect on the quality of life your country will have. Is their some rights that are missing? Do you only have rights from one category? Do you think some rights are more desirable then others? Explain why some rights can be more desirable.

  20. Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms Is part of Canada’s Constitution All laws must be consistent with the constitution Canadians can challenge laws that restrict their rights The government can restrict rights if it is necessary to keep Canada a free and democratic country.

  21. However, the Charter also recognizes that even in a democracy rights and freedoms are not absolute. For instance, freedom of expression is guaranteed, but no one is free to yell “fire” in a crowded theatre, to slander someone, or to spread hate propaganda. Therefore, Parliament or a provincial legislature can limit fundamental rights, but only if that government can show that the limit is reasonable, is prescribed by law, and can be justified in a free and democratic society. The interests of society must be balanced against the interests of individuals to see if limits on individual rights can be justified.

If people are not valued the government has no reason to help them. It’s a sad world we live in if, individuals are not valued. As a human race we need to ensure humans are valued but we do not to value what every individual does. People are valuable but their contributions to society is not necessarily valuable.

( As a group pick a number ranging from 1-10. 1 Being that the Charter is too broad and needs to include more specific rights to protect minorities. 10 being that the Charter is too protective of Individual Rights. Shana from the cartoon would be a 3 and Michael from the cartoon would be an 8.) • For the arguments part write up 3 reasons why you believe your position is correct. • Then go back to find at least five pieces of evidence/examples that support your position. • Your Position/Conclusion should explain why you choose that number and what it actually means.
