MoE Priorities for the Next 5 Years Presentation No 2 - Dtd (2nd June 2009)
Iraqi Electricity Sector: • The electricity sector in Iraq requires large investments to fulfill the increasing demand on electrical power. • The below table shows the expected peak demand for electricity from 2009 to 2015. • The below table shows the situation of the electricity network for the first five months in 2007 and 2008.
The required investment is estimated to be $16 Billion US Dollars from the period 2007 – 2010 according to the National Development Strategy issued by the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation and these estimates include government and private investments. • MoE have plans to increase the production capacity and improve the performance of their transmission and distribution to cover the full demand gradually till 2012 by: First: Rehabilitation of the existing power plants to produce electric power to their existing access design capacity. This will have a low cost effectiveness as well as short time for implementation. Second: Establishment of new production plants (Thermal & Gas) according to the central plan to cover the entire requirement of electricity power till 2012.
