  1. Détente Reasons for détente Fear- Both sides feared the results of confrontation. The dangers of a nuclear war. Economic- Both the USA and the USSR were suffering financially. America was suffering from inflation. The USSR was spending 20% of its total budget on defence. Political- The USSR was quarrelling with Communist China and faced problems from within the Warsaw Pact eg Czech uprising. The USA was occupied in an expensive and ultimately unsuccessful conflict in Vietnam. Overall maybe it seemed just sensible to try and improve relationships between the countries.

  2. Each side could only have 1 anti-ballistic missile site with 100 missiles on. • 5 year freeze on the building of Intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine launched ballistic missiles • Each side is allowed to use satellites to observe each other.   3. S T 2 A L • There would be a limit of ICBMs, SLBMs and heavy bombers for each side. • A ban on the construction of new land based ICBM launchers. • There would be limits on deployment of new types of strategic offensive arms. Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty 2 (1977)

  5. Apollo Soyuz (Space Link up 1975) First joint space project. Astronauts and Cosmonauts from both countries met in space and there was a symbolic hand shake.

  6. The Helsinki Agreements 1975 (The Helsinki Baskets.) Human Rights Security Co-operation Recognition of Europe's frontiers (boundaries). The Soviet Union had to accept the existence of West Germany Make closer links on issues such as; Science and culture and sport. This could lead to closer political links. Each side to respect basic rights such as; Thought, speech, religion and freedom from unfair arrest.
