  2. Infectious Waste Management TCC must ensure that all faculty and students are aware of the infectious waste management procedures in the Allied Health Division We will review storage & disposal of items and clean-up procedures should a contaminated spill occur

  3. Infectious Waste Infectious Wastes at TCC are defined as needles, sharps, dressings, or any material which may have body fluid or bacterial contamination In the Allied Health Division, we produce less than 5 gallons of ‘Infectious Waste’ per month

  4. Sharps “Sharps” include any glass item, needles or blades These items are segregated and disposed of separately from other infectious wastes, such as dressings

  5. Sharps Sharp items are disposed of in hard plastic needle boxes called Sharps Containers DO NOT attempt to remove an item once it is disposed of in a ‘Sharps Container’

  6. Non-Sharp Waste Materials Saturated dressings, gauze or tubing contaminated with body fluids, and gloves are considered infectious waste materials Items are disposed in red plastic lined trash containers

  7. Location of Disposal Containers When sharp containers are full, they are to be placed in the red plastic lined trash containers Pick-up of Infectious Waste is routinely done from rms. 19-2 & 34 Waste containers are kept in lab rooms: 1, 2, 32 & 34 All disposal items will be labeled with the biohazard sticker These items should not be accessible to the public

  8. Spills The person cleaning the area will wear gloves & protective gear to prevent exposure to the infectious waste Decontamination consists of wiping the area with a 1:10 solution of bleach & water Spill kits are located near the red plastic lined trash containers

  9. Practice Safely Knowing how to dispose of items properly, have a good time in your practice labs!
