  3. Displayed is the Search page of DOAJ - the gateway to almost 10,000 OA journals and 1.7 million articles. Note the access via Subject, Journal Language and Journal Country plus a keyword search tool.

  4. Displayed is the Journals A-Z listing for BioMed Central. BMC is a STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher with a large portfolio of peer-reviewed open access journals; it also contains Journals By Subjectand keyword search options.

  5. Displayed is part of the Biomedicine listing from BioMed Central. Most of these titles are not in Hinari as they are not registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals.

  6. PubMed Central PubMed Central (PMC) is an archive of articles that have been deposited in this free repository. Over 4.8 million articles are available. Access is via journal A-Z listing and keyword searches for articles are entered into the PMC search box.

  7. Note the access to the Article (HTML) and PDF versions of the article.

  8. The PubMed database is an excellent source of free full text articles. We will complete the HIV AND pregnancy search.

  9. In the initial page of the HIV AND pregnancy search results, there are links to Free Article(s) and Free PMC Article(s). In this example, the Free full text available filterhas been activated. The search results are 2714 citations. If you keep this filter on, it will limit all future searches to Free full text articles.

  10. HighWire Press 3 Displayed is the HighWire Pressinitial page. The Free Access to Developing Economies link is located on this page. Also of interest is the Free full-text content link. There is a link to both pages in the Other Free Collections drop down menu on HINARI’s Full-text Journals, databases and other resources page.

  11. Now displayed is the Free Access to Developing Economies list of HighWire Press – journals that are available for many HINARI eligible countries. For eligibility, see http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-and-lending-groups#Low_income The access is based on the computer's IP Address and you can go directly to the site using the url.

  12. Unpaywall is a plug-in (app) for accessing scientific papers for free The content is from numerous open-access repositories including PubMed Central, DOAJ, Crossref licensed information, Google Scholar and BASF. These are PDFs legally loaded by the authors.

  13. ‘Unpaywall was launched in April 2017 by the open source not-for-profit Impactstory – funded by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Install the plug-in on your Chrome or Firefox desktop browser. If the plug-in can find a freely accessible full-text copy of the paper you're looking at, the lock symbol turns from grey to green, and you can click on it to get the PDF. If the lock is gold, the article is already freely available via Open Access.   14. Download the plug-in from unpaywall.org to either Chrome or Firefox web browsers.

  15. Now completed is a Google Scholar (non-Hinari) search for hospital infections and developing countries. Click on the links to viewthe(full-text) availability and unpaywall icon. Note – some of the pdf links do not have the unpaywall icons.

  16. The unpaywall plugin has been added to Google Chrome. Opened is a (Elsevier) Science Direct Open Access article with a link to Download PDF. Note the unlocked (green) Unpaywall icon.

  21. (US) National Library of Medicine’s Disaster Information Management Research Center is a vast resource dealing with this topic. The left column box contains key subject links. Note the Emergency Access Initiative for post-earthquake Nepal.

  22. The HIVInSite is a comprehensive, up-to-date resource on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and policy. It is maintained by the University of California San Francisco (USA).

  23. Eldis has numerous topical resource guides including one on Food Security. See the list in the left hand frame for other nutrition topics of interest.

  24. Emergency Infectious Diseases is an open access e-journal from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA). It focuses on numerous issues of value to health practitioners in low-income countries.

  25. The Supercourse is a repository of over 5000 lectures on global health and prevention with many related to public health topics. It is a useful tool for lecturers and students.

  27. The WorldWideScience.org is a global science gateway comprised of 99 national and international scientific databases and portals. Search hiv AND pregnancy.

  28. The 2572 search results include journal articles, technical reports, conference papers and other technical information. Some citations will be to commercial publishers’ sites

  29. The results are divided into Topics, Countries, Authors, Publications, Publishers and Dates. Displayed is the Full Text Available sub-topic.

  30. Displayed is the search page of the Networked Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations (NDLTD) search page. Note the Advanced search tips. Database has over 4,000,000 documents.

  33. Open Grey is a database of 700,000 grey literature references in Europe plus links to many full-text documents - technical or research reports, doctoral dissertations,  conference papers and official publications.

  35. OpenDOAR is a directory of over 2600 academic open access repositories. Click on Search for repositories access page.

Appendix: DSPACE (institutional repository application software) Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, DSPACE (dspace.org)is a free software to build open access repositories - for academic and non-profit organizations. Click on Download Current or Users/Developers drop down menu – for technical instructions.
