Latin Example: • Quōnāvigātis? Ad Graeciamnāvigāmus. • English Translation: • Where are you sailing to? We are sailing to Greece.
Ablative Case • Use 3: Place From Which (Chapter 3, Page 26) • Rule: The ablative case is used with prepositions such as ā / ab, dē, or ē / ex to answer the question Where from? • English Example: I drove from my house.
Latin Example: • Undenāvigātis? AbGraeciānāvigāmus. • English Translation: • Where are you sailing from? We are sailing from Greece.
Yes or No Questions • To turn a statement into a yes-or-no question, add the letters –ne to the end of the first word in the sentence. • Asianeestprōvincia? Is Asia a province? • Esneagricola? Are you a farmer? • Fēminaneestrēgina? Is the woman a queen?
Answers to Yes/No Questions • To answer a yes-or-no question, you repeat some part of the question in your answer. • You’re basically just giving the answer in a full sentence. • Asianeestprōvincia? Is Asia a province? • Asia estprōvincia. Asia nōnestprōvincia. • Esneagricola? Are you a farmer? • Sum agricola. Sum nōnagricola. • Fēminaneestrēgina? Is the woman a queen? • Fēminaestrēgina. Yes Questions • When you ask a question, and expect the answer to be yes, you begin the sentence with –nōnne. • NōnneAsia estprōvincia? Isn’t Asia a province? • Nōnneesagricola? Aren’t you a farmer? • Nōnnefēminaestrēgina? Isn’t the woman a queen? • You answer these questions the same way you answer yes-or-no ones. But your answer should be yes.
Other Questions • To ask a question that does not have a yes-or-no answer, you must begin the sentence with a question word. These question words include quō, ubi, andunde. • Quo nāvigātis?
