  3. Markan Primacy and “Q” • Mark was written first. Why? • We believe Mark came first because Matthew and Luke use many lines of text from Mark • “Q” • Means “quelle” or “source • Luke and Matthew share many lines that neither Mark nor John have • Scholars believe they are drawing from an unknown source they call “Q”

  5. Heresy #1: Docetism Heresy: A belief contrary to Church doctrine Docetism: believes the body is evil. If the body is evil, Jesus as the good God could not have had a human body. Problem: We are not actually saved if Jesus was not fully man. Answer: Jesus actually had a human body because he suffered.

  6. The Gospel of Matthew • Who is Matthew? An apostle, a tax-collector. • Audience: Jews, wealthy Jews • Themes: • Emphasis on the Torah and the Mosaic Law • Why? • Universality of the call to discipleship • Why?

  7. The Gospel of Luke • Who is Luke? A disciple of Paul • Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles • Audience: poor Gentiles • Themes: • Witness • Why? • Inclusion of woman and the poor • Why?

  8. The Gospel of John • Who is John? The beloved Apostle • Audience: Gentiles • Themes: • Miracles • Why? • Connection of Jesus to Creation • Why?

  9. Heresy #2: Adoptionism • Adoptionism: Believes that Jesus was only a great man and was just ‘adopted’ by God • Problem: A man could not have offered a perfect sacrifice to God to atone for our sins. Thus, if Jesus was just a man, we are not redeemed. • Answer: a. Jesus was present as the Word of God at creation, therefore He is God. Only God can perform miracles in His own name, and Jesus performed miracles in His own name, therefore, Jesus is God.
