The Gospels Chapter 8
Jesus and the Scriptures • There are four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. • Gospel means “good news”
Reflection Questions…. • How would YOU go about spreading Jesus’ teachings today? • We have means of communication that were not available to the Apostles some 2000 years ago. What means would YOU use most? • Why???
Inspiration • Inspiration means that God is the ULTIMATE author of the Gospel books. • The Holy Spirit led the human writers to write, without error, the truths God wants told for OUR salvation.
Fun Fact.. • In Catholic worship at mass, we read from both the Old and New Testaments. • In Jesus’ earthly lifetime, many people could not read. So, the Jewish scriptures, which is the Old Testament, were read out loud in Jewish places of worship called Synagogues.
Writing the Gospels • Synoptic means “seen together” or “listed side-by-side” • The writers Mark, Matthewand Luke often recorded the same events in about the same order. Mark’s gospel was written first.
HE is alive! He IS alive! He is ALIVE!
Getting to Know Christ • The first way we get to know Jesus is by reading Scriptures • Second, you do not have to understand every word to get the general idea. • Third, events in the Gospels help us understand how things happened in history. • Fourth, Bibles have helpful notes and comments to help us figure out what is being said. Your Youth Bible is perfect for this! Read it!
Did you know? • At Mass, we stand for the Gospel and listen carefully, because what is proclaimed is truly Good News! • Just as we stand for the Gospel, it is important to take a stand for what the Gospels teach us about Jesus!
How do we LIVE the Gospels? • Ask the HolySpirit to help us understand and live the Gospels message. • We can read carefully and imagine the people and events, like making a movie of them in our minds. • We can pause to think about what we have read, and apply it to our own life
Fun Facts • The original copies of the four Gospels from the early centuries have either fallen apart or been destroyed. • Bible experts have found hundreds of early manuscripts of the Gospels.
