  2. Mandate of the Physician eHealth Program’is to broaden and accelerate EMR adoption among Ontario’s community-based physicians.

EMR serves as a launch pad for provincial EHR in community-based settings • Nearly 80% of care encounters in Canada occurred in community settings • EMRs enhance physicians’ practicesboth clinically and administratively • Physician eHealth Program provides funding to community-based physicians to accelerate EMR adoption and meaningful use • Physician eHealth Program’s strategy strongly supports provincial EHR strategy and ultimately improves health care quality and outcomes Source: Canadian estimates based on Ontario Ministry of Health data, 2005.

  5. eHealth Ontario is progressing to achieving our 2012 targets Ontario now has over 7,000 physicians participatingin provincial EMR adoption programs Today,over 50% of Ontario’s Primary Care Physicians are moving towards or have already adopted EMRs within their practices Over 6,000,000 Ontarians have physicians participating in the EMR adoption program Ontario is past the “tipping point” of EMR adoption – enabling the province’s EHR strategy

Motivating late adopters • Key strategies to drive beyond 50% of EMR adoption • Demonstrateclear value and benefits in adopting EMRs • Promote EMRs as the preferred “point of care” device • Reduce / eliminate paper – automate exchanges of patient information between other care providers / institutions • Reduce overall complexity – simplify procuring, installing, and operating EMRs • Reduce switching costs – take the fear out of being “held hostage” by any one EMR vendor
