1. Diarrhoea Prevention 5th and 7th Or How we eat other people’s shit without knowing it and how to stop it

2. Somu’s story: Somu is a happy man who works hard in the field every day. He likes his breakfast and his wife gives him a big bowl of rice. Somu would eat it quickly. Whe a neighbour Rani made a comment about how much Somu was eating that day.

3. Somu’s wife was angry with the neighbour. Why?

4. Somu worked hard in the field. He felt thirsty. There was no water nearby.

5. There was a stream. The water looked clean and cool. He drank it

6. When he finished work he received 5 days salary. On the way back home with his friends he saw a biriyani hotel. He ad his fried are tasty biriyani with curd and onion

7. On the way back they saw grapes. Look at this picture. (grapes with flies) They ate the grapes

8. Back home Somu was tired but happy ad went to sleep early. At night he suddenly felt unwell. He vomited and had to rush out. He had bad diarrhoea.

9. Somu felt weak and unwell. But his daughter kalaimathy knew what to do. She gave him a special drink. What was it

10. Why did this happen to Somu? Is it because of his neighbour’s evil eye? NO I am telling you it happened because he ate many people’s shit that day! Lets see how

11. The stream water had shit. Show picture of the stream as below but cover the picture of the boy shitting up. The water looks clean but what is happening upstream? Did Somu drink shit. What could he have done to stop this happening?

12. At the hotel he ate the cooks shit! The hotel cook had diarrhoea but he was not allowed time to shit and wash his hands as it was busy. When he shat he would wipe his bottom and then without washing his hands make chutney for the biriyani with his hands mixung the onion and curd. What an we do to make sure we do not eat someone else’s raw shit which can have diarrhoea germs? Eat hot cooked food only in hotels because cooking kills the germs

13. The grapes had shit! Look at the picture – what is sitting on the grapes

14. Where do flies come from? Use the fly model to show how it carries shit on to food. What can we do prevent it? Wash fruits. Eat only peelable fruits like banana if you cannot wash them

15. Washing hands- make a child wash hands into a bowl and show how much dirt is in hands. What will happen if you eat without washing hands? Where will this dirt go? What does the dirt conatin? (germs, shit- how)

16. Cutting nails- scrape someone’s black nails- show the dirt. What is in it (germs, shit) Where will it go if we have such dirt nails and we eat with them or cook with them?

17. Challenges: tell this story at home. Check if little children wash hands before they eat everytime. Check the nails of little children and cut then wvery week>
