Early Reflecting Ophthalmoscope Digre, Corbett
Early on, all of the ophthalmoscopes were "reflecting"--just like Helmholtz's original. Reflecting means that they used an external light source such as a candle, sunlight, or a lamp. Quickly after Helmholtz' initial report, many inventors made improvements over the next 50-60 years. Here you see early reflecting ophthalmoscopes using a disc of different lenses so that changing concave lenses would not be necessary. This disc known as the Rekoss disk had many variations over the next decades.
