19. The Media’s Message Directions: Pick a song or TV show that you listen to or watch on a regular basis and answer the following questions honestly. The more transparent you are, the more you’ll get out of this assignment.

20. The Benefits of Self-Control In your Accountability Groups, read through the benefits of sexual self-control and discuss which are most important to you and why.

21. Envelope Activity Step 1: do NOT open up your envelope until I tell you. Find someone in the class and ask them who their favorite band is. Once you’ve both shared, open up your envelopes and write everything on your notecard that is written on their notecard and vice versa. If theirs is blank, then you obviously have nothing to write down. If yours is blank, write down what they have. Step 2: Find someone in the class and ask them what their favorite food is. Four? • Review Most Common STDs. • There are Fewer cures for STDs now than there were twenty years ago. • Bacterial STDs can be cured. • Viral STDs cannot be cured. • It is impossible to get an STD if you only ever have sex with a virgin who does not have an STD. • STDs can be genetically passed on.

What Science Has to Say… • Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that is released causing pair bonding. • The female brain releases Oxytocin, the same chemical which causes maternal bonding during childbirth and breastfeeding. • Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centers. • Dopamine causes the male brain to bond to the emotions surrounding his sexual experiences. • The average brain is not fully developed until approximately 25 years of age.

The Truth About Sex • What about condoms? • “Condoms provide almost no protection against HPV.” • Even if condoms are used accurately and consistently [which rarely happens for youth] they succeed in only decreasing the risks, not eliminating them. • American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Newsletter referred to condoms as “an antiquated system of birth control….Condoms often do not prevent sexually transmitted disease. • Each year 25 percent of women whose partners use condoms for contraception get pregnant. • Condoms are a poor way to practice “safe sex.” They often break, slip, leak, and some viruses are so microscopically small they find their way through the pores in the material.

25. Pray, Read, Grow • Take this time to focus specifically on praying for the morality of sexuality: • Your purity • Your future spouse’s purity • Our culture’s misunderstanding of the role of sex • Those who have been negatively affected by sex (by choice or otherwise)

The Case for a biblical view of sex Why do People who follow God’s plans have the most fulfilling sex lives? • Saving sex for marriage pays considerable dividends. • The more you preserve yourself sexually before marriage, the greater satisfaction you will have with your future spouse in marriage. • People Benefit from Committing to Marital Permanence. • In other words, being committed to one person for life will actually benefit you in your sexuality! Sexual enjoyment flourishes in the midst of a committed relationship. • When you are able to get to know someone with true intimacy, sex becomes far more than merely a pleasurable physical activity. Rather, it becomes a sacred connection of two souls on the deepest level imaginable. • God’s Plan Offers Far Greater Sexual Freedom. • You are free to enjoy yourself without fear of negative consequences. • People Benefit from Believing God Created Sex. • Just believing that God created sex for a purpose will benefit you in your future marriage!

Some Final Issues • Why is pornography so dangerous? • Brief exposure to pornography can lead to anti-social attitudes and behaviors. • Pornography can diminish a person’s sexual fulfillment. • Viewing pornography often leads to increased fantasies about rape. • Males who look at pornography easily become addicted and begin to desire more graphic or deviant material, ending up acting out what they have viewed. • There is a demonstrated societal link between pornography and violence.

Stages people go through in the process of becoming addicted to pornography • Exposure • Addiction • Can take place only when a person chooses, as an act of the will, to travel down this path. • Escalation • Need more explicit avenues to find fulfillment. • Desensitization • Standards of decency and normality get set aside for the sake of more intense stimulation. • Acting out • People do what they see.

Overcoming Pornography • “No one supposes that every addict of such material will act out his fantasies, but it is willfully blind to think that none will.” • “Sow a thought, reap an act; sow an act, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.” • The apostle Paul says to take “Every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5).
