  1. Julian Rotter Locus of Control

  2. What determines the outcomes of your actions? • Internal Locus of Control: A belief that outcomes (positive or negative) are brought about by our own behavior.OR • External Locus of Control: A belief that outcomes (positive or negative) are under the control of other people, fate, or luck.

  3. What is your locus of control? • Try this test to determine where your locus of control lies • How did you come out? • What do you think about this?

  4. When is one's locus of control internal? • 14-15 year-old Norwegian girls have a more internal locus of control than the boys (but that is no differences at other times) • Healthier people have a more internal locus of control than people dealing with illness • Economically stable people (good job, good financial state) have a more internal locus of control than poorer people with job problems • Majority culture people have a more internal locus of control than minority people, esp. when discrimination is present • Children in smaller families have a a more internal locus of control than children in larger families

  5. Locus of control and self-efficacy • It seems that an internal locus of control goes together with a sense of self-efficacy, with the perception that one has a measure of control over one's own life. • Possibly even, one could have an internal locus of control in certain areas and not in others.

  6. Is it always better to have an internal locus of control? • What does an internal locus of control allow you to do? • Are there some times where an internal locus of control would be a disadvantage? What do you think?
