  2. National Curriculum English, Maths, Science, History It’s a 2 year process of adaptation Results should level themselves out after this time Be prepared for some challenging concepts, especially in Maths NAPLAN - May 14th, 15th, 16th

  3. Homework WEEKLY • Retrieved from the Year 5 website in grid format • Nightly reading (15 minutes +) • Weekly spelling (Soundwaves – Unit and writing words out CHIMP) • Weekly maths activities -iMaths and/ or number facts • Other tasks (Inquiry and Investigation/ Thinking Skills/ Creativity and Performance) • Teaches time management • Brief note in diary if not done - some modification needed • Workroom if pattern emerges – i.e. not done, not here etc

Learning Extension Process: Tests > Give us Stanines (1-9) > Selection Boys were tested in *Comprehension *Spelling *Grammar and Punctuation *Maths Results (Stanines of 1- 9) allocated to each subject for each boy. Stanines 1, 2 indicate further testing needed, with possible Learning Support. Stanines 8, 9 indicate that extension classes may best suit these boys.

  5. Religion • Morning Prayer, Grace Before Meals etc • Weekly Assemblies - Liturgies • Parables (Term 1)….new units to follow • Follow the BCE guidelines

  6. English • Writing (whole class with Writing Coach) – argument, narrative, report, poetry • Grammar and punctuation skills (Oxford Book) • Skills and processes (Spelling-Soundwaves) • Reading (explained in next slide) • Reading Groups (next slide) • CARS/ STARS - Comprehension • Oral presentations

Reading • SRA Cards and Reading Box • Teacher directed lesson with HERE, HIDDEN and HEAD questions • Ziptales (comprehension) online • 2 x Rainbow Reading lessons/ 2 Extension lessons per week for selected students • At home Reading – Read 15 min+ four times per week • Library • 45 minute session each week. Time set aside for borrowing • Must have a chapter book in their desk for reading

Maths Heavy emphasis on mental number facts (times tables etc) that require speed and accuracy 5 + Lessons per week 3 + Number + Algebra lessons per week 2 + other strands per week (Meas + Geom, Prob +Stats) Extension/Learning Support for selected students (Groups may change depending upon the term and the topic)

  10. Humanities - History1788 - 1901 • Colonial Times – reasons for establishing the colonies • Colonial Times – the lives of people in Australia’s colonial past • Gold Rush - impact of different cultures during colonial times • Explorers – who was responsible for establishing new frontiers

  11. Technology • Weekly computer sessions x 2 • Computers / IWB in classrooms • Word, PowerPoint, Prezi/ Websites (Wix or Weebly), Publisher

  12. P.E. – Darren Cullen • Sun Smart Policy • Sports uniform required on Tuesday • Sports uniform required on Friday

  13. Japanese – Paul Ramsay • Tuesday lessons • 10 minutes per week homework (revising and completing any set work) • Bookwork must be up to scratch • Test at the end of each semester

  14. Performing Arts – Music Barb McGeever • Homework – 5 minutes every night • 45 minutes of Music on Mondays

  15. Social Skills – Peter Parry Art – Alex Davison • Visual Diary kept in Art Room Mondays- 45 minutes

  17. Behaviour Management Traffic Light System Rewards and Praise (Individual Teacher Systems – stickers, stamps, raffle tickets, term draw,tuckshop vouchers etc) * Negative – progression, workroom, parent contact, Deputy Principal

  18. Camp / Excursions • Camp Tuchekoi Gympie– Term 2 after NAPLAN very muddy…..old clothes…..drink bottles…….LABEL EVERYTHING ……sleeping bag covers, white socks, towels and raincoats. LET THEM PACK THE BAG! • St Helena Island Term 1 – Wed in Week 4 NL/ Week 5 TB – volunteer parents needed ( 1 per class) • Beenleigh Gold Rush – Term 3

  20. Finally…. • Thank you for attending • Formal Parent Teacher interviews will be held in Week 5 of Term 1 so that we may discuss your son’s start to the year (these are optional) • Please fill in a little note at the back of the room before you leave and pop it in the box on the way out
