A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking Presentation by David Harris
Introduction • Religion • Science • Universe
Science • Black holes - “… a star that was sufficiently massive and compact would have such a strong gravitational field that light could not escape…” (84) • Worm holes - “The Einstein-Rosen bridges didn’t last long enough for a spaceship to get through: the ship would run into a singularity as the wormhole pinched off.” (164) • Time travel – “Gödel’s space-time had the curious property that it was rotating… This had the side effect that it would be possible for someone to go off in a rocket ship and return to earth before he set out.” (160)
Religion • God as a part of the Universe – “God would choose how the universe began and what laws it obeyed, but he would not intervene in the universe once it had started.” (188) • The place for a Creator – “So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. But if the universe really is self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have neither beginning nor end: it would simple be. What place, then, for a creator?” (146)
Universe • Geocentric • Heliocentric • Static • Current view
