  2. Lecture Capture??? Definition(s): • Real time, in situ • Real time, hybrid • Real time, distance • 'Lecture-ettes' • Tutorials, etc. Thus, what tool is needed and when??? ....is it Less is more? Initially, yes.

  3. Why Lecture Capture? • Fast-paced classes (most 2 hours) • Many international students • Distance-learning classes @ DCB and University College • GSSW interviews • Test reviews • Tutorials: in class, librarians, Instructional Tech's • Guest Speakers • Student Presentations • H1N1 (a late addition to the list)

  4. Had Wimba but... • Access from inside Blackboard • Too much technology & work for simple recordings or tutorials • Technology not keeping up w/ needs in spite of great support

Have DU CourseMedia but... • Big, involved process • Requires account/course request ea. qtr • It is managed by staff, not by individuals, thus not on-demand • Would still need a recording method • Requires time for processing/loading of recordings • Requires a separate system access, in addition to Blackboard or eCollege

  6. Many Lecture Capture systems... What did we really need • Convenience for the masses (fac/staff/student) • Ease of administration & support • Ease of installation • Simple to use for faculty/staff/students • Quick turn-around times • Easy to share inside Bb, eCollege, etc. • Record anywhere – not tied to hardware • classroom • office • home

Selected CamtasiaRelay Portable solution Admin ease Ease of use; quick turnaround Easy to share url Anyone can use Reasonable price No Talking-head Mic issues easy to solve No big files on Bb Comparing Systems[in 5+ months we tested 3, reviewed 2 others] • Not selected Mediasite, Echo360 • High quality recording/audio • Hard-wired rooms • Talking-head option • Significant expense for equipment/ software/server • No easy real-time • Not able to record video (fps rate) • Admin time

  8. 3+ years with Camtasia Relay • 3100 + Recordings, ~150+ frequent users(384 accounts total): • F2F classes - daily • Distance learning classes (DCB & UColl) • Tutorial creation by faculty and staff—esp Librarians at Penrose & Law libraries • Special guest speakers Skyping in, including two Skyping from Switzerland! • Test reviews • Test monitoring • Paper grading, etc.

  9. Two rooms fully loaded: HD cameras w/ presets, ceiling mics, pc Record every class 12 wk w/ @2/wk ea this sem. Captures full, in-class conversations Administrator schedules all classes to be recorded; edits for content Administrator has custom interface w/ which to adjust cameras from home Excellent Blackboard building block Labor intensive, big monetary output Graduate Tax Prog & Mediasite

But.... we still needed a Real-Time, Campus-wide System • Many of the same requirements applied • Needed a system requiring minimal administrative help • Anytime/anywhere • Licensing that allows campus-wide use: faculty, staff, students • Friendly, fast & responsive company • Real-time meetings from anywhere w/ screen share, audio and video

  11. Why a Real-Time Solution • No. of needs beyond one-way recording: • Real-time or live distance classes • Hybrid, live from w/in classroom • Non-class Meetings • recruiting • interviews • travelling DU employees • Fundraising • Bonus: Distance-support tool for UTS

  12. Lessons Learned & Impacts Biggest lesson: Don't allow people to just record lecture over ppt. whether real-time or just one-way. Bad teaching. Bored students. Whatever we get, it won't completely fit someone; Camtasis Studio bridges the gap. Impacts: • Relay & AdobeConnect required no new staff; > I absorbed the main CamtasiaRelay GUI admin & file management; it logically fits into my role > ~10 hours by server admin on upgrades, minimal maintenance. • FT Fac & Staff accounts created on Connect system; minimal maint; CTL/OTL, GSSW, UTS, and I train most people. • Grad Tax prog admin puts in much admin time and they've upgraded mic system already
