  1. Computer Knowledge Learning Intentions – to learn more about computers, how they function, size of systems, uses in home and industry and accessories available.

  2. Computer Knowledge (Familiarisation) • Success Criteria • I will be able to answer general questions on - • Computer Peripherals • Computer Input and Output Devices • Memory and Storage • Hardware, Software, Licenses. • Quality of Graphics

  3. Computer Knowledge (Familiarisation) • Success Criteria • I will be able to answer general questions on - • Computer Memory - RAM and ROM • CAD and CAD / CAM in Industry • The Processor - Binary and Decimal Systems • Simulations and Modelling • Types of Software – eg, CAD, DTP, etc.

  4. The Microchip (Binary Counter or Processor)

  5. Computer Motherboard showing slots for Video and Audio cards, slots for RAM and Processor chip with fan mounted above for cooling.

  6. Computers count using the binary system. They are processors of binary information.

  7. Computer Internal Layout • VDU • Motherboard • Processor • RAM slots • Video and Audio cards • Power Supply • CD or DVD drive • Hard Drive • Keyboard • Mouse

  8. Peripherals (things you can plug in).

  9. Peripherals

  10. …more peripherals

  11. Use of CAD to edit Designs of Electronic Products for Consumers

  12. Drum Plotter – takes A0 size paper -- plots vectors Multi – Pen Plotter – uses several different coloured pens to plot out a drawing.

  13. Computer Hard Drive

  14. Methods of Storage

  15. CAD / CAM Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacture

  16. Milling out aluminium using a mill controlled by CAD/CAM

  17. Animated Simulation Model This computer model is animated to show how each part moves. It is easily edited if the design sizes must be changed. It saves labour and materials as the model does not have to be built in a workshop and the model can be e-mailed anywhere in the world. Disadvantages – it cannot be used by a person, handled, or tried out.

  18. Animated Simulation (Model)

  19. Simulators – used for training drivers / pilots, etc, or fun / Leisure industry

  20. View of a screen from a Flight Simulator. Programmes of airports and weather conditions make flying the plane very realistic. Used before actual flying training begins. Advantages – safety of pilot / citizens, no fuel wasted, no environmental pollution.

  21. Sitting inside these simulators allows a person to be tilted to different angles, feel the “vibration of the engines”, get a very realistic feel for the controls and even experience crashes!!
