  1. Physics 211American University of BeirutFaculty of Arts and SciencesDepartment of PhysicsINTRODUCTION, MOTIVATION & OVERVIEW Dr. Ghassan Antar Dr. Ghassan Antar

  2. Course Number and Title Physics 211Electricity and Magnetism • Physics 211 is the second part of a three-semester introductory course in physics designed primarily for students in Engineering and other applied sciences. • It is a three-credit course. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  3. Purpose and Motivation of this course • Grasp the physical concepts related to electricity and magnetism or more precisely electromagnetism. • Understand the basic mathematical aspect used to describe and formulate physical principles. • Develop problem-solving skills through conceptual understanding and mathematical modeling of the underlying physics. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  4. Purpose and Motivation of this course • Appreciate the importance of physical principles that govern our world as well as the role of physics-Engineering in modern society. • Acquire scientific and intellectual abilities such as critical thinking and independent learning. Always remember: • Physics is not about formulas, formulas are about physics. • SYSTEMATIC application of laws of physics Dr. Ghassan Antar

  5. Resources Available to Students • Textbook:Principles of Physics, Halliday, Resnik and Walker, 10th International Wiley Publishing. • WileyPlus website www.wileyplus.com/class/439456 • Solutions of the recommended problems and copies of the lecture slides will be placed on Moodle and WileyPlus. • On-line: use Google to search for a particular subject, wikipedia is also recommended. • The MOST important resource will be your notes taken during the class. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  6. Lectures • There will be two 50-minute Physics 211 lectures per week on Mondays and Wednesdays. • The most important aspect of the course material will be presented in an interactive manner. • Students must attend all lectures, as regular participation is essential to understand the concepts presented. • Copies of the Power Point lectures slides will be placed on MOODLE. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  7. Recitations • Recitation sessions are devoted to answering questions related to the material covered in the previous week and to solving the “Class problems”. • Students are urged to attempt to solve all problems beforechecking their solutions. • The solutions of selected problems will be available on MOODLE or on WileyPlus. • The solutions of all the problems of the book are only made available for consultation by the students, during the office hours of the course coordinator. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  8. Examinations • There will be two quizzes to be given during the semester and a final examination to conclude the course. • No documentation can be used during the quizzes and the FE, both of which will consist of short multiple-choice questions/problems and conventional problems. • No programmable calculator is allowed during the exams (actually you may not need it at all). Dr. Ghassan Antar

  9. Quizzes dates • Quiz I: OCTOBER 5 Chapters 23 to 26. • Quiz II: November 2 Chapters 27 to 29. • The Final Exam: covers all of the chapters. • Make sure that you have understood the basics (not formulas) of the requested chapters. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  10. Grading Criteria The final grade will be a weighted average of: • Quiz 1 (25%). • Quiz 2 (25%) • The final exam (50%). The instructor reserves the right to modify these percentages. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  11. Attendance • Attendance of the lectures and recitations is mandatory. • If a student misses a lecture or a recitation, he/she is entirely responsible for the material covered as well as any announcement that was done during class time. • DO NOT EMAIL ME about anything happened during the class, e.g. exams date, chapters included etc. • Any student arriving late (i.e. after the start of a lecture or a recitation) may not be allowed to attend the rest of the class. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  12. Missing a quiz or the Final Exam • No make-ups will be given for missed quizzes. • In case of absence from a quiz due to a “force majeure”, the weights of the remaining quizzes may be readjusted, if the instructor of the course considers the reason for the absence valid. • Medical reports will be considered only if, they are issued by the University Health Services of AUB or the AUB Medical Center. • A make-up for a missed final exam will be given only after the Administrative Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences approves the request for such a make-up. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  13. Cheating • Any student caught cheating or attempting to cheat during an exam will be dismissed on the spot and will receive a grade of zero on the corresponding exam. • The case will also be reported to the Students Affairs Committee for further action to be taken. • Such action could include the student being awarded a failing grade in the course and a Dean’s warning as well as the possibility of being dismissed from the University. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  14. Class discipline • No eating, drinking, smoking or use of mobile phones is permitted during class time. • The instructor reserves the right to dismiss from the class, any student acting in a manner that is considered disruptive or counter productive to the teaching/learning process in the classroom. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  15. Office Hours • Two regular office hours will be held on • MONDAYS 3:00-4:00 PM and • WEDNESDAYS 3:00-4:00 PM • My OFFICE is in the Boustany Building room 321. • Students are strongly urged to make use of the availability of the teaching staff, during these office hours for any questions or comments they have about the course and the material covered. • If you cannot attend any of the posted office hours, e-mail the person you would like to see. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  16. Questions • Always ask your questions. Do NOT hesitate. • There are no stupid questions. • Use the beginning of the class to ask about the previous session and during and at the end to ask about the on-going session. • You can be sure that any question WILL benefit not only yourself but also the whole class. Dr. Ghassan Antar

  17. The Physics Program covered during this semester Dr. Ghassan Antar

  18. Electricity and Magnetism (I) • CH 23: Electrostatics: charges, fields and Coulomb’s law • CH 24: Gauss’s law and the easy way to determine electric fields • CH 25: Electric potential, and capacitors, dielectrics • CH 26: Capacitance • QUIZ #1 Dr. Ghassan Antar

  19. Electricity and Magnetism (II) • CH 27: Currents and Resistance, Ohm’s law, effect of temperature • CH 28: DC circuits, RC circuits and Kirchhoff’s rules • CH 29: Magnetism • CH 30: Sources of Magnetic Fields • QUIZ #2 Dr. Ghassan Antar
