BLESSED ARE THE MEEK “For they shall inherit the earth.” Matt. 5:5
Jesus is Serious About This • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst, for they are sticking to their diets.” • “The meek shall inherit the earth, just as soon as the strong are finished with it.” • Jesus’ qualities don’t equip us for earthly living, but for heavenly!
Meekness – Gentleness, the Negative • Not a word for timidity. Look at Jesus, Peter, John, Paul. • Not a surrender of our rights. Acts 16:37; 25:11. • Not weakness. Spinelessness. “Meek as a mouse.”
The Positive • Do Christians need assertiveness training? No! • Equilibrium – balance of strength and gentleness. A ship’s captain guiding his ship thru storm • Selflessness, magnanimity. A fruit of power, not of weakness. Gal. 5:23.
The Grk. Word is used of taming a wild animal. It’s power is brought under control. • Anger, indignation, love, hate, controlled
Examples • Moses – Numbers 12:3; Exodus 32:15-28 (esp. v. 20). • Jesus – Matt. 11:29; Matt. 5 – Meekness, but MY WAY 7:14-15 • Meek Christians listen to God – James 1:21f. Teach God’s Word – 2 Timothy 2:24f
Inherit the Earth • Psalm 37:11, 22 – the promised land. Not USA, but Canaan. Not literal, but spiritual. • The necessities are provided for us, but our hope isn’t abundance here. • Psalm 37:16. • Note the progression: poor in spirit, mourn, meek. God is remaking us.
