E-Portfolios • What is an E-Portfolio? • It is an online collection of professional and academic documents (e.g., your resume/Curriculum Vitae, professional statement, and evidence of Counseling Program Goals and Learning Objectives). • How does the Counseling program utilize E-Portfolios? • Students submit coursework (i.e., evidence) and rationales (i.e., brief narratives) that demonstrates their understanding and knowledge of each Goal and Learning Objective. • NOTE: Counseling Program E-Portfolio Template is on Blackboard.
Professional Development • Professional Philosophy Statement: The philosophy statement is a 500-word essay about the professional values that guide your work with clients. • Cover Letter: The cover letter is a general letter written to acquire a position in the type of setting in which you are most interested in working. It’s important to craft your letter toward your specific professional intention. • Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Your resume is a brief presentation of related training and work experiences. A Curriculum Vitae is a comprehensive presentation of the professional and academic experiences that have prepared you for a position in counseling. You can find samples of both documents online.
Professional Development • Certificates of Development/Training • MFT and MHC: Child Abuse and Maltreatment • SC/BSC: Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence Prevention, Social Patterns of Harassment, Discrimination and Bullying (Cyber) • Hours Log
Academic Development • Six Counseling Program Goals and Learning Objectives • Theory • Humanistic Foundation • Pluralism/Multiculturalism • Ethical and Legal Standards • Self-Awareness • Writing
Academic Development • Four Areas of Competence that your E-Portfolio will be assessed on by the Counseling faculty: • Proficient • Competent • Emerging Competence • Incompetence
Academic Development:Rationale and Evidence • What is a Rationale? • A Rationale is a 100-250 word summary that describes: 1) What you have learned about a specific Goal and Learning Objective, and, 2) An explanation of why you have chosen your evidence in support of the Goal and Learning Objective. • What is Evidence? • Evidence is completed course work that you choose that demonstrates what you have learned about the specific Goal and Learning Objective.
Academic Development:Rationale and Evidence • What makes a proficient Rationale? • A proficient Rationale is one that focuses directly on the Learning Objective and describes what you have learned about it as a counselor-in-training. • It also includes some of the language of the Learning Objective and focuses on areas of strength and areas that may need improvement in your knowledge and competence. • A proficient Rationale also describes your Evidence (e.g., your coursework) and explains why you have chosen it and how it illustrates your competency regarding the Learning Objective.
Academic Development:Rationale and Evidence • What type of Evidence should you choose? • Evidence should be uploaded as completed course work that illustrates and validates your learning about a specific Goal and Learning Objective. • Evidence chosen should be from your classes and also from your Practicum and Internship fieldwork. Example: Paper assignments, journals, Power Point presentations, transcripts with clients, fieldwork documents from class or your site, supervisor evaluations, etc. • Evidence chosen does not have to be perfect --- you can choose a document that you made errors in and one that you improved your work on and explain your learning curve for the Learning Objective. • The same evidence can be used more than once but it must clearly fit the Learning Objective --- you must be able explain why you have chosen it multiple times. It is recommended that you use the same evidence no more than two times.
Academic Development:Rationale and Evidence • What is the Counseling faculty assessing about your Rationale and Evidence? • The Counseling faculty is reading your Rationale and Evidence to: • Assess your learning of each Goal and Learning Objective. • READ AND EVALUATE your Rationale VERY CAREFULLY for content (e.g., what you have learned) and correct grammar and spelling. • NOTE: We are NOT RE-GRADING YOUR EVIDENCE --- we will only review it to assess it’s relevance to the Goal and Learning Objective.
Recommendations • Your E-Portfolio is a living document that represents you, your hard work as a counselor-in-training in your program (MHC/SC/BSC/MFT) and the overall quality of your learning and knowledge. • Treat the process of creating your E-Portfolio with the respect it deserves by allowing yourself adequate time and space to complete it. Rushing through it and/or doing it at the last minute may result in a completed document that doesn’t fully show your competencies, learning, and knowledge. • Failing your E-Portfolio exam will mean you will have to meet with a faculty member for advisement and you will have to revise and resubmit it. This may result in delayed graduation.
