University Library System The Chinese University of Hong Kong Colin Storey: April 2007 施達理 Treasuring our Traditions and our People: Riding the Wave and Making a Difference over the Next 25 Years
The e-revolution電子改革 • Forces us to ask the most basic questions about the profession 推動我們思考關於專業的最基本問題 • Librarians could drown in its huge ocean currents 圖書館員會捲入這個巨大的洪流中 • In SWOT analysis terms, it is a threat and an opportunity 以SWOT分析,電子改革既是挑戰亦是機遇
Why 25 years? • 25 years ahead means a single generation 未來25年代表一個單一的世代 • 25 years ahead means university librarians have the power now to select our successors and therefore influence the future 未來25年表示大學圖書館長現在有權力挑選繼承者,因此能影響未來
Our People and Our Traditions我們的傳統及人才 • Strength:We are the library BRAND. 強項:我們是圖書館的品牌 • Weakness: We may be too keen to jettison our professional traditions – knowledge built up over hundreds of years.
I ask two basic questions:提出兩個基本問題 • One: Will there even be academic libraries in 25 years time for my successors to inherit and manage? • Two: Assuming the answer is “yes”, what personal and professional attributes are needed?
One: The Threat - Will there even be academic libraries in 25 years time? Like all groups of professionals, librarians should be: 就像其他專業一樣,圖書館員需要: • Reactive to technological and societal changes 對科技和社會上的改變作出回應 • Proactive in decision-making in facing those changes 面對這些改變要積極作出決策
Concerning the “reactive”: 1關於「回應」:1 • Librarians are good at using new technologies • 圖書館員善於運用新科技 • Librarians were one of the first groups of professionals to espouse the computer-illiterate ‘end-user’ • 圖書館員是首批專業人員去支授沒受過電腦訓練的使用者 • But, the computer sector and the ease of Web use have re-invented what librarians have been doing for centuries • 但是,電腦界和容易使用的互聯網更新了圖書館員多個世紀以來的工作
Concerning the “reactive”: 2關於「回應」:2 “Professions develop when jurisdictions become vacant, which may happen because they are newly created or because an earlier tenant has left them altogether or has lost its firm grip on them”[my italics].
Concerning the “reactive”: 3關於「回應」:3 • The MARC revolution – so what? • Did any normal person ever understand what the word ‘classification’ meant in libraries? • Ordinary people now know terms like ‘search engines’ – Google are better at being new and hip than librarians!
Concerning the “reactive”: 4關於「回應」:4 • We are even changing our job titles • 我們甚至打算更改我們的工作名稱 • What other profession does this so often? • Are we committing professional suicide?
Concerning the “proactive”: 1關於「前瞻」:1 Librarians ARE doing something to try to ensure their survival: 圖書館員現正努力嘗試去確保自己的生存空間 We are going “E-”, to: 推行“電子化”是要: • Remain of relevance to our readers (‘end-users’) 保留相關資料予我們的讀者 • Save money 節省金錢 • Save space 節省空間
Concerning the “proactive”: 2關於「前瞻」:2 • One example of a proactive decision by librarians which may go very wrong by the year 2032: REMOTE STORAGE • 圖書館員所作一個前瞻性決策可能在2032年成為很大錯誤的例子:遠端儲存
Concerning the “proactive”: 3關於「前瞻」:3 • What is the future of the physical space called a library? • Can it exist without books? • If there is no physical space called a library, what need is there for librarians?
Concerning the “proactive”: 4關於「前瞻」:4 • Are we giving away the family jewels? • As chapters 9 and 70 of the道 德 經 (Dao De Jing) succinctly note: 持盈常保 (Chí yíng cháng băo) 被褐懷玉 (Pī hè huái yù) “Maintain fullness to the brim, (keep thy peace and thereby) secure abundance. Hide the jade in thy bosom and cover it in rags (for there is no wisdom in undue exposure).” “保持滿滿的,(令你平和因此)確保豐盈。用舊布把珠玉包起藏在你的懷裏 (不當的露眼是不智的)”
Two: The Opportunity – What Professional and Personal Attributes Will Librarians Need?
Professional Attributes專業素質 • Fully conversant with appropriate technologies • 善於利用相關科技 • Literate & readers: aware of the History of the Book and the Library Profession • 文化素養及讀者:瞭解書籍的歷史及圖書館專業 • Global in perspective • 具備全球的視野 • Committed to the free flow of information • 致力於資訊的自由流通 • Skilled in public relations • 擅長於公共關係
Personal Attributes個人素質 • Outgoing personality: lively, responsive, adaptable • 外向的性格:活潑、敏於反應、適應力強 • Brave and persistent: a strong political sense • 勇敢及堅持:具備濃厚的政治觸覺 • Quick-thinking: articulate and able to write • 思考敏捷:表達力強及善於書寫 • A strong political sense: fighting for resources/delivery on promises • 強烈的政治觸覺:爭取資源/實現承諾
We will still make a difference in 2032 if we… • Value the rich traditions of our profession • 珍惜本專業的豐富傳統 • Are proud to remain ‘librarians’ • 仍以“圖書館員”為傲 • Avoid loving the “new”, simply because it is “new” (neophilia): “The history of invention is not the history of a necessary future, to which we must adapt or die, but rather of failed futures, and of futures firmly fixed in the past” (Edgerton 2006).
