4th Year Presentation 2007Jake, Melise and Arleigh Everything You Wanted to Know to Get into Pediatric Interventional Dermatology
Outline • 4th Year Process • CaRMS Timeline • Electives and Travel/Accomodation • CaRMS Application • Reference Letters • Interviews, Ranking (briefly)
The Process • The process has begun • September 2004 • Long, stressful and often dramatic process • IT WILL ALL WORK OUT! Anesthesia Pediatrics
Electives • Most people have AT least 14-15 weeks before CaRMS • 10 Weeks “Electives” • 4 Weeks “Selectives” (5/7 groups) • Remaining 2 groups have medicine/surgical selectives • 1-2 week of holiday break _______________________________ 14-15 Weeks of Electives
Electives • Length of Electives? • Varies depending on type of specialty • Range from 2 - 4 Weeks • 3 weeks probably best (again, debatable) • Locations? • DIVERSIFY! • Not necessary to do MORE than 1 elective in your first choice location *careful w/ all eggs in one basket * • Who do I work with? • Program Directors? • Committee Members? • Random Staff?
Electives • Start setting up your electives NOW • Most electives cost ~ $100 • U of T ~ $250, UBC= no refunds • Share your resources!!
Electives • When you are on your electives: • Meet everyone, not just committee members (people talk) • Set up a meeting with the program director*** • DON’T appear too keen/overdo it – other students, residents talk too! • Do Call, take the extra consult, offer away • Don’t be afraid to Socialize… • Ask about the program, make connections
Elective Travel • It’s expensive, you can try to go EW or vice versa, not always possible • If you can, try to get there a day early to make sure you know where to go…never good to be late on 1st day • If you need a car, just rent one (at the end of the day, what’s another $300)
Elective Accommodations • CFMS website • Email your friends in other programs, and the electives coordinators • Standard rate: $100/week (i.e. if you are subletting or renting) • Look into this early- hotels= expensive • Try to stay close-ish to work if you have no good transportation means

Letters of Reference Every supervisor KNOWS they will be asked for a reference letter • Ask for a STRONG letter of reference • Give them: • a) mailed addressed envelope or even better • b) EXPRESSPOST addressed envelope • c) give them a copy of your CV • d) make their deadline at least a week before the actual deadline • e) Don’t panic- CaRMS office = in Ottawa
