CRIS Initiative • June 2001, a joint initiative between TxDOT and DPS established the CRIS Project • Mission – implement system that will provide enhanced efficiencies to capture, manage and deliver timely and accurate data to improve safety of Texas roadways
TxDOT Today Accurate and timely collection of crash data is critical to the success of the following functions: • State and local transportation project planning and prioritization • Highway and railroad-crossing safety evaluations • TxDOT and private traffic safety studies
TxDOT Today • Inaccurate crash records collected with outdated technology cause incomplete, inaccurate data that may compromise decision-making • On October 1, 2007 TxDOT became the state custodian of crash records.
CRIS – Production • All CRIS components are in production: • Scanning • Image Quality Assurance • XML Submission • Search • Audit and Location Audit • Batch Locator • MicroStrategy Reporting • Crash Map Builder
CRIS – Crash Data Backlog TxDOT awarded a contract to HDI Solutions to complete processing the backlog, crash data for years 2003-2006 by 12/31/07 TxDOT amended the HDI Solutions contract to include entering 2007 crash data as received
CRIS – Crash Data Backlog • HDI has successfully entered 2005 and 2006 crash data • HDI anticipates completing entry of 2004 crash data by 11/9/07 • HDI is entering 2007 crash data as received • TxDOT is in the process of reconciling the data for the backlog years
CRIS – Initiatives • TxDOT provided training to their districts in May and September 2007 • TxDOT will allow agencies to request a generic file of CRIS data in early 2008 • TxDOT has developed a new CRIS component called Crash Editor, which provides automated data correction capabilities
CRIS – Next Steps TxDOT has included a XML initiative in the CRIS Strategic Plan for 2007-2008 TxDOT has targeted Houston PD as an agency that would benefit from submitting their crashes via XML TxDOT is interested in exploring this option with the Houston-Galveston Area Council
Technical Orientation Each agency will attend a Technical Orientation, which will cover the following topics: • Mapping crash form fields to XML • Procedures for submitting XML • Validation processes and procedures • Error handling and reporting process • General Q & A
