Improvements in TECHNOLOGY aided Europeans to explore oceans: • MAGNETIC compass – determined direction • ASTROLABE – figured out latitude at sea (this was later replaced by the sextant in the 1700’s – determined latitude and longitude) • Creation of better and more accurate MAPS and CHARTS • IMPROVEMENT IN SHIPS – BIGGER and BETTER • New type of ship: CARAVEL • Large CARGO areas • TRIANGULAR sails • Ship’s KEELallow it to explore close to shore
