Where is Auschwitz. • Auschwitz is in Poland, about 40 miles west of Krakow. • It was established by the Nazis in the suburbs of the city of Oswiecim which, like other parts of Poland, was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. Auschwitz was the German name for the town.
How Many People Died in Auschwitz, • The total number who died at Auschwitz is estimated at between 1.1 million and 1.5 million, 90% of which were Jews; also among the dead were some 19,000 Roma (Gypsies), who were killed in July 1944, and some 83,000 Poles.
when was Auschwitz Built? • The camp at Auschwitz was established in May 1940 as a large and harsh concentration camp, initially intended mainly for uncooperative Poles and Polish patriots and intellectuals. • The extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) was built in 1941-42 and became fully operational in the spring of 1942.
