3. Brainstorm Name 3 current trends that did not exist during your grandparent’s generation. Trends may be technological, environmental, educational or something else. How do these trends make your family life different from that of your grandparents?
4. LEQ 1: Trends in Society There are many trends in society that affect the family. Some of these are the aging population, lifelong learning, environmental change, and new technology. There are changes in the structure of family life. Some family patterns are increasing while others are decreasing. The workplace is changing with different kinds of jobs. Service industries are growing and there is a more global workforce.

6. Changes in Society Families today live in a world of rapid change. A trend is when a noticeable change happens over time. Trends tell you what might happen in the future.
7. Trends Some current trends are: The aging population-there are more older people today than in the past partly due to better medical care and improved nutrition and health. Lifelong learning-people of all ages attend college or take other training. People can take classes through the Internet and can take classes according to their schedule.
8. Trends cont. Environmental change-Extreme weather conditions, the lack of fresh water in many parts of the world, etc. Coping with environmental change is a challenge to all families. New technology-makes life easier. It increases efficiency at home and work. Families manage their resources so that technology is a tool to bring the family together.
9. Activity Identify and write one trend in society that has affected your family on a post-it note. Place your trend in the column on the chart paper in which you believe it fits. How many trends are viewed as both negative and positive?
10. LEQ 2: Changes within the family Family structure has changed: Single people-the number of single family households is growing Couples-more couples are postponing having children. Because people live longer, there are more couples that have launched their children. Nuclear families-has decreased. Partly due to divorce, some because couples have fewer children. Blended families-divorce rate is high but has been going down in recent years. Most divorced people with children remarry. Single parent families-divorce creates single parent families. Extended families-many extended families are living together today. Adult children who live with parents is increasing. They may bring their children along too.
11. LEQ 3: Changes in the Workplace Changes in the workplace can also impact families and the society. Rapid change can be seen in the workplace. This change is often spurred by technology.
12. Technology and the Job Market New technology can do the tasks that people once did. Advances in technology are constantly and rapidly changing how people work. You may hold a job in the future that may not exist today. You may also have jobs that require training in new technology that you haven’t used before.
13. Service Industries Most employed Americans work in the service industry. This is a career that provides assistance to others for a fee. Service industry jobs usually pay low wages and may require workers to work any time of the day or night. Many services have resulted such as online shopping, web design, house cleaning and food delivery.
14. A Global Workforce The workforce has become global rather than local. This means products and services are brought and produced by people all over the world. When you buy goods & services from other countries, you are participating in the global economy. The world becomes smaller through communication and transportation. The global workforce has influenced families because families are apt tow live and work with people of all ethnic background as a result. Learning to understand and get a long with different types of people is an important part of life.

17. LEQ 4: What is culture? Everything that defines a group of people including their common traits and customs is called culture. Many things affect what a culture is like: Economic and geographic conditions Knowledge Art Technology The more people participate in the culture, the stronger the society becomes.
18. Discuss Why have both housecleaning and food delivery services increased in recent years? What does the increase in these services reveal about recent changes in society and families? Do you view the increase of these services as a positive or negative change? Why?
19. LEQ 5: Where culture comes from Wherever people live, they learn what is customary in their cultures. (EX: clothing people wear is based on the climate; food people at depends on what is available where they live). People need to know the rule of the society where they live, they learn to communicate so they can get along in that society. This happens when children are socialized in the family. Patterns and beliefs are learned and carried on through the society’s history, communicated by actions and words.
20. Culture Affects Family Life Cultural patterns and beliefs have a direct effect on family life. A family takes on the patterns and ways of life that are common in its society. When a family knows about more than one culture, its life is richer. Family members can choose customs that fit their values.
21. Cultural diversity Diversity is variety in the sense that people are all different in one way or another. It’s important for people to learn about diversity and its Influence over the family. Some qualities that make each culture unique are their languages, attitudes, customs, and daily routines. Ethnic groups can also be different. Diversity does not always have to be cultural. People are diverse in many ways including age, race, religion, gender, or ethnic group.
22. Families teach culture Families are the main teachers of culture in any society. Each generation passes along what it has learned to the next. The boundaries between cultures today are not as distinct as they once were. People around the world have more chances and reasons to get together. They may travel and do business across cultures, communicate on the Internet, or move from one culture to another.
23. Activity: Cultural Scavenger Hunt Chat with people in the room. Find people who have had the experiences listed on your worksheet. Try to talk to everyone in the room.
24. Teach empathy One important thing a family can teach is empathy. Sometimes people fear what they do not understand, and a different culture may create such feelings. Feeling empathy will improve relationships and as people learn about other societies they understand them better. This can help as they meet and work with people from other cultures at home and at work.
25. Journal entry Pg. 73 Real Life: Respecting Other cultures Two students from another country are new to Tony’s school. They are still learning English and have not made many friends yet. What can Tony do to make them feel welcome?
26. LEQ 6: Cultural Pride Culture is a source of pride for many families. Cultural pride includes self respect and celebrating ones background. The cultural background is part of a family’s history. Families want to save their cultures, not lose them.
27. Cultural Heritage Many families take pride teaching the younger members about cultural heritage. This includes the beliefs, customs and traits that have been important to their ethnic group. Every family’s heritage can be valued. You can feel good about your own heritage and still value the heritage of others.
