After WW1 • The 1920’s caused much frustration • They expected the Treaty of Versailles to undo the chaos caused by WW1 • Instead it caused more trouble: • Losers: felt unfairly treated • Winners: believed that they had gained nothing • Everyone felt cheated: who was to blame?
A new Map of Europe • Every national group was to have its own country • So part of Germany was given back to Poland and France. • They divided Austria and Turkey into a number of countries • They could not draw a neat line and put all Germans and slaves on one side and poles or Italians on another side. • Many minorities resented being part of these countries • Majority groups feared the smaller nationalities
Rise of Fascist Dictators • After WW1, Europeans lost faith in their old leaders (Princes, Kings, Queens, emperors and their advisors) • They had lead Europe into WW1 • At the Treaty of Versailles, democratic governments for the “new” countries was instituted. Voters had difficulty judging the new politicians. • Then came the 30’s…
The Great Depression and the rise of fascism • The Depression caused problems in stable democracies like Canada, the US and Britain • In an unsettled Europe, the effects were disasterous • Facist leaders, like Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco promised them better lives and blamed foreigners, communists, democrats and Jews for the problems of their countries.
Flip to page 133 - 135 • Outline the following in a PowerPoint for your fascist country: • The leader • How they took power • How they manifested themselves in the country • What was significant that happened (murders, military control of the country, etc)
