InDesign and Digital Publishing A quick look at what’s possible with InDesign CS6 and CC
How do you make all these customers happy? A new hire guide for tablet users I want flyers, business cards, newsletters and brochures Newsletter with videos for adobe acrobat users
The good news?InDesign does both Offset and Digital Printing Digital Publishing Newsletter with videos for acrobat reader users
The not-so good news?Think separate sides of the brain Interactive PDF Physical Printing SWF ePUB DPS - publish apps HTML Newsletter with videos for acrobat reader users
Some Digital Publishing Types • Interactive PDF • eBook Apps • ePub/Kindle – ebook with flowable type (ePub is a specific file type)
For the InDesign designer… • You can share it with ANYONE who can download a plug-in • But you are designing for READER not PRO • You can have some interactivity, sound, movies… • But no Flash for tablet/mobile (and buggy for desktop) • It looks EXACTLY like you want (closer to the print side of the brain) • But – that means it’s less flexible (no screen reflow) • It’s not easy to share with tablet users
Ebookdefined • An electronic book (variously, e-book, ebook, digital book, or even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices
But, what is an ebook, really? Delivery of information, in an electronic form, on some kind of device • Computer • Tablet • Mobile Phone • eReader
It’s really a website • Screen not print • Flexible format • Variable sizes • Might or might not have • Color • Audio • Video • HTML
It’s really a website • Screen not print • Flexible format • Variable sizes • Might or might not have • Color • Audio • Video • HTML
Formats • EPUB • Nook, iPad, Sony reader, Kobo (eReader, touch, arc…) • MOBI • Amazon (Kindle, Fire…) • PDF • IBA (iBooks Author)
Devices • iPad • ePUB, PDF, IBA (iBooks), HTML • Amazon (Kindle, Fire…) • AZW, PDF, MOBI, PRC, non-DRM, TXT • Nook • ePUB, PDF • Sony Reader • ePUB, PDF, TXT, RTF, Dov, BBeB • Kobo (eReader, touch…) • ePUB, PDF, TXT, RTF, HTML
Whoisyouraudience? • Distribution channel • Find your audience from your website metrics • Android, Apple iOS, or both • Who the end user is determines your workflow
InDesign to eReader • Linearization • Export to EPUB does not include native ID artwork • Cover page 800x600 • EPUBs can’t be larger than 2GB • Audio and Video are size issues • Images (Web formats only)
For the InDesign designer… • The biggest issue is Linearization • You can tag your content to control the order! • No bells and whistles • NOT the same file as a print file or an interactive PDF file
For the InDesign designer… • Linked Content! • Alternate Layouts • Linked Styles • Liquid Layout! • But…
Basic DPS tidbts • Single App vs. Series(issue apps) • Single Editions are free with CC! • You’ll be redesigning your pages multiple times! • You’re a software developer not a publisher • Thanks David Blatner • You can have Analytics! • You’ve got to get Apple’s approval – not too “book like” • Publishing to the Apple iTunes store is NOT easy
Starting with DPS • Get all the DPS tools – current update • Install Adobe Content Viewer on tablet • Adobe ID and Developer for iOS/Android • Build both Vertical and Horizontal documents – NOT Alternate layouts
