4. Definition…..By law… • Intentional written, electronic, verbal, or physical act against another student, school volunteer, or school employee with the effect of: • In fear of harm to his or her emotional or physical well-being or damages to property • Creating a hostile, threatening, humiliating or abusive educational environment due to pervasiveness or persistence or power difference between bully and target • Interfering with a student having a safe school environment • Perpetuating bullying by inciting, soliciting, or coercing an individual or group to demean, dehumanize, embarrass, or cause any type of harm

5. Definition….. Student-friendly… • Bullying is being mean to another kid over and over again. • It can by physical, verbal, or emotional…. • It can be circumstantial, chronic, or the result of a situation • Can be over a period of time OR a one time event- depending on severity • The bully is seeking attention and or power over someone else by committing these acts. • Bullying often includes: • Teasing • Talking about hurting someone • Spreading rumors- gossiping • Leaving kids out on purpose • Attacking someone by hitting them or yelling at them

6. Bullying does not always happen in person. Cyberbullyingis a type of bullying that happens online or through text messages or emails. It includes posting rumors on sites like Facebook, sharing embarrassing pictures or videos, and making fake profiles or websites.

7. How it is Addressed and Consequences • Students (victim or witness), parents, and anyone who reports an issue to an administrator or Mrs. Pam is spoken to regarding the report. • All parties named in the report- offender or witness- is also interviewed • Cameras (bus or school) can be viewed if necessary. • Disciplinary action is taken based on the outcome of the interviews and camera footage. • Police are contacted. Parents are contacted. • Actions such as: • Suspension, Expulsion, and Arrest • Bullying is a crime! If found guilty of bullying you will be arrested, which may lead to expulsion.

8. If you see it…. YOU MUST REPORT IT!!!! • When you see it, you may not know what to do….. • You might be worried, nervous for the bully to find out it was you and you become the new target…. BUT… • By law you are required to report the incident… Failure to report can result in disciplinary action at school and if witness is harmed, you may be arrested for failing to report….

9. Bullying Law…..Retaliation…… • Retaliation is • when a bully comes after those who reported the incident or the victim for reporting the incident….. • This can be done directly by the bully or the “friends” of the bully • This includes social media communications • When a victim comes after the bully(ies) • Can be done through friends and/or social media • If you are found guilty of retaliation, you will receive school disciplinary action up to include an arrest and expulsion.

10. Conflict vs. Bullying • When bullied… • Imbalance of power, typically not friends • Repeated negative actions • Purposeful • Serious with threat of physical or emotional harm • Strong emotional reaction from victim and little/no reaction from bully • Power or attention seeking • No remorse- blames victim • No effort to solve the problem Typical between students/friends….. • Equal power or friends • Happens occasionally or just one time • Accidental • Equal emotional reaction • Not power or attention seeking • The person has remorse • Work together to solve the problem

11. General information about Bullying! • 1 in 5 students have reported being bullied at some point at school…. • It is not teasing- teasing involves 2 or more friends who act together in a way that seems fun to all the people involved where both tease equally but never involves physical or emotional abuse/harm. • Review of examples: • 1. Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names2. Bullying through social exclusion or isolation3. Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting4. Bullying through lies and false rumors5. Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully6. Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully7. Racial bullying8. Sexual bullying9. Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet)

How to report…. • Go online on the district website at www.irsd.net from home • Write a note and submit in the guidance office in the bully box- don’t have to write your name…. • Come to Mrs. Kansak, Mr. Macrides, Mrs. Pam, Mr. Chamberlin, anyone in Guidance office…. Or any teacher/adult in the building…. • If you want to make a report but don’t want others to know you are “telling” find a way to come to the office area and get the information to us….
