  2. Growth of Trade in the Colonies

  3. North American colonies at this time are seen as economic resources that could produce raw materials. - English controls on trade (Navigation Acts) will later cause many conflicts.

  4. *Mercantilism* • economic system where nations created and maintained wealth by carefully controlling trade Result = ? Nations become stronger by building gold supply and expanding trade

  10. Navigation Acts 1. England believed the colonies existed to serve them 2. Believed should export more than import 3. Required colonists to do the bulk of their trading with England 4. Set duties on products 5. Sailors had to be English 6. Ships were inspected 7. All ships carrying goods to America had to stop in England and pay taxes

  11. The Colonies began to smuggle and resist British control. The British began to tighten their control. • Do you see a foreshadowing of future events??

  12. In early American settlement, goods came from two main sources: England and Africa. This came to be known as Triangular Trade England, Africa and America

Communication between captured Africans improves as you slowly begin to understand pieces of the different languages… • What are the advantages and disadvantages of an immediate slave rebellion? • Why is communication important to you now? • Do you think any Africans successfully overpowered their captors? What obstacles awaited them if they took control of the ship?
