GETTING STARTED • Encourage your child to start or step up their revision • Get your child to draw up a revision timetable and pin it up. • Make sure it looks sensible – with a good balance of work and relaxation. • Make sure they have a quiet place/space in which to work. • Take a friendly and encouraging interest.
TOP 10 REVISION TECHNIQUES • Use postcards e.g. to make topic cards. • Make mind maps. • Use highlighters. • Pick out copy down key points. • Make up a mnemonic. • Learn off by heart. • Share the work – revise with a friend. • Record info and play it back later. • Invent exam questions and plan how to answer. • Get on the revision websites, full list in the homework diary
EFFECTIVE REVISION • Your child needs to be an active learner. • Become involved – ask them to explain; help with testing; encourage studying with a friend • Reach an agreement about distractions • Revision Raises Results • Improve by at least a grade
Reduce Distractions • Look carefully at the study area with your child • TV, DVD, Playstation – build time for them into Revision Timetable • Computers- Be aware of MSN – the biggest distraction of them all!!
AVOID STRESS • Stick to the revision timetable; adopt a steady pace. • Revise for 30-50 minutes at a time. • Take short breaks and build in rewards. • Use spare time, e.g. 5-10 minutes to recap what has been learned. • Find time to relax. • Encourage talk about what they’re doing
Increase Brain Power in 2 Weeks • Eat 3 healthy meals a day including breakfast • Take 30 minutes of physical activity, even if it’s just a walk • Get as much sleep as possible • DRINK 1-2 LITRES OF WATER PER DAY • Reduce caffeine consumption-coffee, tea, fizzy drinks. and especially high energy drinks • Eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.
