Challenges Our Children Face Today Presented by Chris Reeves * Benton church of Christ Gospel Meeting * Oct. 1, 2017
Challenge #1In the realm of religionour children face pluralism • The belief that all religious truths are equally valid, and we cannot be dogmatic on any position (Ac. 17:23) • This has led to denominations, refusal to defend beliefs, de-emphasis on the Bible
Challenge #1In the realm of religionour children face pluralism • We must face this challenge with the absolute nature of truth (Jn. 8:32; 14:6; Ac. 4:12)
Challenge #2In the realm of educationour children face humanism • The belief that the supernatural (God) does not exist, and the naturalistic wants of man are the greatest concern (Rom. 1:28) • This has led to evolution, sex education, situation ethics, tolerance training
Challenge #2In the realm of educationour children face humanism • We must face this challenge with a primary education in God’s word (Judg. 2:10; Prov. 1:7; Lk. 2:46-52; 2 Tim. 3:15)
Challenge #3In the realm of societyour children face hedonism • The belief that reaching pleasure -what makes you feel good - is the highest goal in life (Lk. 8:14; 2 Tim. 3:4; Tit. 3:3) • This has led to selfishness, immorality, lack of self-control, immodesty, violence
Challenge #3In the realm of societyour children face hedonism • We must face this challenge… • by learning what is wholesome pleasure • by doing what pleases God, not what pleases self (Jn. 8:29; Rom. 8:8; 1 Thess. 4:1; 2 Tim. 2:4; 1 Jn. 3:22)
Challenge #4In the realm of the Lord’s churchour children face incrementalism • The belief that gradual change to accommodate oneself or society is both necessary and acceptable to God (Gal. 1:6) • This has led to gradual change in church doctrine, organization, preaching, attitude, involvement
Challenge #4In the realm of the Lord’s churchour children face incrementalism • We must face this challenge… • by learning what can properly change (1 Cor. 9:22) • by the unchanging gospel of Christ (2 Thess. 2:15; Heb. 2:1; Jude 3)
Challenges Our Children Face“The Three P’s” • Preparation to face these challenges starts in the home – the “boot camp” (Eph. 6:4; 1 Tim. 5:14) • Parental example is necessary to face these challenges – the “platoon leader” (Josh. 24:15; 2 Tim. 1:5)
Challenges Our Children Face“The Three P’s” • Protection is necessary to face these challenges – the “armor” (Eph. 6:10-18)
