Timeline of e-book readers @ NCSU • May 2008 – 6 Kindles & 2 Sony loans begin • September 2008 – 12 Kindles added • February 2009 – 12 Kindle 2s added • August 2009 – 6 Kindle DXs added • November 2009 – 1 Nook & 1 Sony added • April 2010 – 30 iPads added • October 2010 – Additional devices requested

  5. Kindle Checkout • If available, patron notified within 24 hours • 7 week loan period – renewals possible • Kindle held for patron behind circulation desk • Kindles circulated in preservation box! • Periodical Kindle DX with 4 hour loan

  6. Kindle purchases • About half fiction and half non-fiction • Fulfills browsing collection need • 60%+ not owned in other formats • 20%+ checked out • 650 purchased titles (around 400 individual titles) • Average price per title = $10

  7. Kindle management • One purchased title per 6 units • Titles are purchased by ADS staff nightly • 6 separate Amazon Accounts

  8. Kindle management • Acquisitions notified via email with receipt from Amazon • Cataloging notified by Acquisitions • Title and e-book reader connected using bound-with • 350 Kindle circs last semester

  9. Sony Program • Loaded with “classic titles” (public domain)

  10. iPads & iPod touches • Intended more for user download (PDF, EPUB, HTML, TIFF) • Apps for all major bookstore e-book readers (Kindle, B&N, Borders) • Compatible with most online based e-book content currently purchased by the Libraries • Issues with Ebrary, IEEE, Wiley, & Knovel

  11. iPads & iPod touches (cont.) • iPads now circulate for 4 hours but will also have 3 day option soon • iPod touches circulate for 4 hours and 7 days • Loading iTunes U and free iBooks content in addition to free and paid apps • 390 iPod circs last semester • 200+ iPad circs a week (4000+ since purchase)

  12. What’s next @ NCSU • More devices of all types • Anticipating new devices to explore • Divorce device and content • Make technology lending request process better • Create portal to e-book content
