Changes and Challenges in 2010 • Moving from a traditional teacher centric approach to a student centric model • Linking lessons to the 5 Directions for Learning • Engaging students in a way many of them have been used to being taught in Primary • Ensuring outcomes are improved A>M, M>E • Ensuring that meaningful teaching and learning takes place
Why the Habits? • Habits of Mind are research informed characteristics of successful learners. • They are not Thinking Tools as such but the ways to think and act when trying to be a successful, autonomous learner. • Teachers are already using Habits of Mind (just not explicitly) • The HoM will allow us to demonstrate student progress against the key competencies.
How do Habits of Mind serve the new curriculum? • Habits of Mind fit perfectly into the new curriculum statements within each learning area • HoM are what the key competencies look like in action • They are the attitudes and attributes that give focus for learning and many schools are developing them to help their students become more independent. They can be applied at whole school level down to classroom level. • Students learn how to behave intelligently • The HoM connect learning areas, key competencies and values as well as enabling effective pedagogy to occur within classrooms
Shared understanding • HoM give students the shared language to develop their own mindful learning and allow students to take the lead in their own learning. • They allow thinking to look similar across all subjects, this enables students to transfer skills from one class to another.
Designing curriculum to infuse the HoM • Stage 1 – use unit planning template to select HoM, KC’s, Values etc to develop, this will depend on the students in front of you (and may therefore vary by class), selection of content • Stage 2 – consider how you are going to assess content, how will this draw on the HoM / KC’s ??– these outcomes should be demonstrable. • Stage 3 – planning criteria then assessments then lessons • Stage 4 - evaluating
Yr 11-13 • It is hoped that by the end of Y10 that the HoM will be ingrained into the students approach and use of the 16 HoM will be ‘internalised’, meaning students are effectively able to: • Understand what the meaning of each habits is • Know how to use each habit • Become alert when to utilise each habit • Understand the value of using each habit • Be able to self assess the effectiveness of their use of the habits.
