Early Greek History • First Greek kings were Mycenaean leaders • Learned about Minoan culture through trading; after Minoan collapse, became the most powerful on the Mediterranean • Dark Age: less trade; poverty among people; no written records • Dorians invaded Greece; brought farming technology and new weapons • Greece began to colonize
The Polis • Nobles who owned land overthrew Greek kings • The polis, or city-state, was like an independent country. WHY? • Acropolis: main gathering place in polis on a hill; sometimes served as the religious center • Agora: open area where people could meet and debate issues; also a marketplace • City-states varied in size and population
