Sketchbook Assignment #6 Watercolour Creatures Due: Friday, December 6, 2013
Assignment • Using the paper and watercolour paint provided in class (please do not paint in your sketchbook), create a drawing of a mythical creature and paint it using watercolours. • Try to use the techniques that will be learned in class on your painting. • You may use black ink to outline your final painting, but it is best to do this once your paint is dry.
You can choose to create your own original character, or you can copy from an existing image. • Your subject matter should be fantasy/mythical – an image of something you would not find in real life here on Earth! • Suggestions include: dragons, fairies, elves, unicorns, anime characters, Disney characters (ie. Tinkerbell, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid), or movie characters (Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Harry Potter, etc)
Steps to Success • Begin with a light pencil drawing of your creature • Paint in your background. Try to have a more abstract/colourful background, rather than a realistic one – use your new painting techniques! • Build up your creature in layers – be sure to use a full range of values – leave some areas white, and make sure some areas are well shaded
