Alliston's First Solar Powered WIFI System - Enhancing the Downtown Experience!

The Alliston Business Improvement Association (ABIA) has implemented a completely solar-powered WIFI system in downtown Alliston, making it the first in Canada. This initiative enhances the shopping experience, attracts new customers and businesses, and provides marketing opportunities for existing businesses. The project was solely funded by ABIA members and will continue to expand in 2018/2019. Free WIFI access in downtown Alliston benefits businesses, visitors, and the community as a whole.

This exciting project demonstrates to our members and community partners that we are willing to invest in progressive initiatives to enhance our downtown ecosystem. • These types of programs and technologies enhance the shopping experience of current customers, attract new customers and attract new businesses looking for a progressive commercial area to conduct business. • This initiative also will provide our existing businesses a competitive advantage as well as marketing opportunities.   3. Alliston Business Improvement Association RURBAN …The Best of Both Worlds • The Alliston BIA WIFI Project was solely funded by the ABIA Members. In future, we anticipate that marketing opportunities will be presented to membership and will off-set any future maintenance costs. • The project Leads were ABIA Communications Director Lachlan McGurk and ABIA Chair Mike Jerry. There was an extensive procurement process including interviews, discussions and quotes from WIFI companies; communication & research with the Town of New Tecumseth Staff and Councillors to ensure that this project came in on time and on budget. The first phase of the project is complete and running along Victoria Street. The second phase will be implemented in 2018/2019 and continue the FREE WIFI to the West end of our ABIA area. • This project supports our RURBAN Branding for downtown Alliston and this innovative initiative validates Alliston as a viable, progressive centre of commerce.

  5. Downtown Businesses will benefit • Businesses need fast, reliable wireless internet service at an affordable price. The ability for business to tap into this new network at a discounted rate is a real value for our Alliston BIA members.

  6. Visitors to downtown can stay connected • Use our data, not yours. Enjoy taking in one of our downtown RURBAN Events or shopping your way up and down Victoria Street while accessing the FREE wireless internet provided by the Alliston BIA.

A more attractive area for new businesses • Businesses consider Wi-Fi accessibility a key factor when choosing a locale. • The Alliston Business Improvement Association is investing in the types of services and technologies that will attract new and support existing businesses in competing and thriving in the digital economy.

Visitor and Event Attendance can be measured • A dedicated Wi-Fi network in downtown Alliston will enable the Alliston BIA to gather visitor numbers and event attendance metrics that will help us provide better programs and events for our ABIA Members. • Access to reliable data makes for good strategy and leads to sound business decisions.

  9. Enhanced Security Measures • A wireless network in the downtown core could eventually lead to an added layer of security. In the future, working with the Police Board, the ABIA could be outfitted with cameras to monitor certain areas that experience issues such as Graffiti and theft. Reducing the cost of police staff and services such as graffiti removal.

  10. POWERFUL ANALYTICS Helps Merchants understand when and where the crowds are, age groups, gender, surfing habits and so on. NO PERSONAL DATA IS EVER CAPTURED… OR SOLD TO CAMBRIDGE ANALYITCA! 

  11. COMING SOON…. For a fee, merchants will soon be able to advertise on the platform when users access the Wi-Fi ABIA Events can also be promoted to logged-in users

  12. FREE WIFI is already a value to visitors downtown. An Alliston resident came into the ABIA office just prior to Christmas. She was upset as she needed to send a parcel but had no way of printing the send slip. We were happy to help by printing this for her, however she said she had no data on her phone to email it to us. We were pleased to remind this local resident that the ABIA offers FREE WIFI downtown. She connected to our WIFI and sent it to us, we printed it and she walked away happy. SERVICE… is all part of the RURBAN EXPERIENCE in Downtown Alliston.
