Japanese Approach to Management • Many of the management concepts that we may take for granted originated with Japanese manufacturing; termed “Theroy Z”, or Japanese management, many of these practices are common in both part time and full time employment, with the goal of increasing company employee loyalty, motivation and resulting in greater satisfaction
Japanese Approach to Management • Based on the Human Resources approach to management • Management and workers work together as partners. • Value individuals as people and individuals’ input into the running of the company • Assumes that people want to contribute, thus management provides the opportunity (and encourages) their contributions to the company. • GOAL: one team of committed and motivated employees
“Theory Z” • Make employees feel like they are part of the corporate family no unions • Long term employment company loyalty • Collective decision making ownership = work hard results in greater satisfaction • Collective responsibility group training • Teams common dining rooms, uniforms, no reserved parking • Slow promotions; non-specific job classification “multitask”
Just in time (JIT) Inventory Control • First popularized by the Japanese • Factories have limited storage space and materials on hand. • Parts arrive just as they are needed numerous times per day. • Requires strong communication and infrastructure (transportation) links
Quality Control & Productivity • Kaizen = continuous improvement • Everyone is involved in making decisions about production goals and quality standards • TQM (Total Quality Management) • No defects are tolerable and employees are responsible for maintaining quality standards
